Tiruchirapalli is the 4th largest city of Tamil Nadu, which is located on the banks of River Cauvery. Tiruchirapalli is renowned for its rich architectural heritage, culture and and traditions. Situated at the Cauvery Delta on the plains in between Palni Hills and Shevaroy Hills, Tiruchirapalli lies at an altitude of 88 meters from above sea level, with isolated hillocks.
Tiruchirapalli had its honor under the rule of the Nayaks of Madurai. The Rock Fort was built and the city was outstretched by the Nayaks. The city became a major trading centre in the South during the period of the Nayaks.
Tiruchirapalli District was built during the rule of the British East India Company and Tiruchirappalli city was the capital city in the year 1801. Under the British kingdom, Tiruchirappalli had broad recognition as an important educational and commercial centre.
Tiruchirapalli is best-known for its combination of tradition and modernity. The present day Tiruchirapalli city can be roughly broadly categorized in to Commercial Centre, Old City and Cantonment Area. The Old City which is located towards the North, consists mostly of temples in the city. The Commercial Centre or bazaar dwells the central part and it is the droning area of the city. Cantonment, presently is a residential area situated in the South of the city, and it was a military quarters of the Madras Regiment in the year 1800s.
Tiruchirapalli has many choices from pilgrimage sites to adventure activities. Ranganathaswamy Temple, Rock Fort Temple and Srirangam are the major attractions of Tiruchirapalli city. Sri Ranganathaswamy temple, Rock Fort and Tiruvanaikkaval temple are the major attractions of Tiruchirapalli. This temple city also has Vayalur Murugan temple, St. Joseph’s Church, Maariamman temple, St John's Church, Vekkaliamman temple and Gunaseelam Vishnu temple to its visitors. The the Kallanai Dam and Government Museum are the other tourist attractions of the place. Gangaikondacholapuram temple of Thanjavur and Moovarkoil of Kodumbalurand Brihadeshwar temple are the most common pilgrimage places by the tourists visiting Tiruchirapalli.
Tiruchirapalli also has many scenic beautiful places like Mukkombu, Viralimalai and Puliyancholai Falls. Karaikudi is also known for its heritage buildings and is yet another place offered by Tiruchirapalli. The best time to visit Tiruchirapalli is from October to March.
