The most common mistake users often make with remote desktop software is buying a package that does too little or a package that does too much. So before you do anything you need to identify your needs and capabilities. Figure out what features you looking for and what ones you do not need. By doing this you will clear away a large portion of what is available out there.
Take your firewall for example, you might have this on all the time and it does the job it should. But some remote desktop software needs to be configured first to work with your firewall.
• When connecting, keep in mind this is like leaving your front door unlocked with your home. Keep things safe and secure.
• Learn the keyboard shortcuts for your program. Many have the same grouping of short cuts that do the same thing. You never know when that information will help you.
• If you have a poor connection between you (the host) and another device, cut back on your color depth on your computer. This will greatly pick up the speed of what you are sending (or receiving)
• Don’t delete file information from either machine. This may seem like common sense, but it is so simple people have a hard time with it. Doing so can corrupt the computer and the program.
• Keep your drivers up to date for both your computer and the programs that are used on it. This will help cut back on some possible technical issues.
Remote desktop software is very customizable to match most if not all the needs you have. If you have done your homework on the program you are using and still believe you need assistance in setup, seek help. Because you’re able to have complete access to another computer from your own one you can easily harm either the host computer or the end user computer because of unskilled actions. It is always best to have an understanding of what you are doing before you do it.
Because remote desktop software lets you use one computer while accessing another, remember you can remove, save and install files. Change passwords, open website, email and change system settings. Some other useful tips for using software like this is to setup and do routine maintenance on the remote computer. This opens the door for helping out less technologically savvy people while helping them and their machines.
