THE LEPTIN HORMONE.
The hormone Leptin is a very powerful and influential hormone which was discovered approximately 10 years ago and has totally changed the way that science looks at fat, nutrition, and metabolism in general.
Prior to the discovery that Leptin is produced by our fat cells, fat was viewed as strictly an energy storage depot; an ugly one at that, and one most everyone was trying to get rid of. About the same time it was also discovered that fat produced other very significant hormones and fat became an extremely important endocrine organ; like the ovaries, pancreas and pituitary; influencing the rest of our body and, in particular, our brain.
The main function of Leptin is to send a message to our brain and tell it how much excess fat our body has stored and how our Leptin level has raised. In our evolutionary history, it was advantageous to store some fat to call upon during times of famine. However, it was equally disadvantageous to be too fat. So,rather than our brain being in control of the rest of our body it is, in fact, subservient to our fat. Our fat, by way of Leptin, tells our brain whether we should be hungry, eat and make more fat; or whether to go to work and burn off our excess fat.
Studies have also shown that Leptin control plays a large role in the reduction of internal inflammation; balancing of blood glucose levels; increasing Adiponectin, the hormone responsible for creating lean muscle, as well as the reduction of triglycerides.
Triglycerides are a form of fat in our bloodstream. People with high triglycerides often have a high total cholesterol; a high LDL (bad) cholesterol and a low HDL (good) cholesterol level. Several clinical studies have shown that people with above normal triglyceride levels (greater than or equal to 200mg/dL) have an increased risk of heart disease. People with diabetes or who are obese are also likely to have high triglycerides.
Leptin also plays a major role in regulating our metabolism. Metabolism can simply be defined as the chemistry that turns food into our life-force, and therefore controlling our Leptin level is critical to our well-being. Leptin's normal function is to control our appetite and also promote the burning of triglycerides which bloat our fat cells. Unfortunately, as we accumulate excess fat cells (adipocytes) C-reactive protein is released which binds to Leptin in the blood, imparing Leptin transport across the blood-brain-barrier.
The result: No message to 'control our appetite and burn the excess fat' is received by our brain and we get fatter and fatter with each passing year as we continue to over-eat and create more adipocytes. Thus, we continue to raise our Leptin level and we end up with The Vicious Cycle of Leptin Resistance.
Controlling hunger is one way that we control our Leptin level. Hunger is a very powerful and deep-seated drive that, if stimulated long enough, will make one eat and store more fat. The only way to eat less in the long-term is to not be hungry. The vast majority of weight loss diets cause one to lose lean body mass -- muscle and bone -- in addition to fat, and that is definitely undesirable. It is far preferable to teach the body how to burn fat so that lean body mass is spared.
By lowering our raised Leptin level we allow our brain to receive the message to burn straight from our fat cells; making our weight management journey easier than we ever imagined.
So now the question is:
How can we lower our Leptin level?
At the University of Connecticut, USA, scientists tested a proprietary blend of natural polysaccharides and fatty acids during an eight-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Dr. William Kraemer, PhD, Director of UCONN reported that the results after this very intensive clinical study showed:
1)A significant, rapid reduction in body fat
2)A significant decrease in waist, hips and thighs measurements
3)Leptin levels reduced by 42%
4)A 90% greater fat loss than that achieved by the placebo group.
Unfortunately, the importance of the Leptin hormone is largely unknown to both the public and the medical community.
