Basque Country is a beautiful land comprising 3 provinces: Alava, Guipuzcoa and Vizcaya. Their capitals are Vitoria-Gasteiz, San Sebastian and Bilbao respectively. Basque Country is fondly known as Baskland; it offers many colorful and diverse cultures with its own Euskera language. However, Basque Country is one of Spain’s most industrialized regions although the many natural parks and landscapes have been conserved. Basque Country is a favorite for many activities such as hiking, riding and mountain sports. City Offerings rnThere are many beautiful and developed cities in Basque Country. This includes San Sebastian which is a renowned aristocratic beach resort since the 19th century. It has a great reputation which offers exclusivity to the more affluent groups of society regardless of origin. Bilbao is the largest city in Basque Country with an important economic and industrial purpose. However, there are many historical monuments which have been conserved such as the exquisite historic quarter, astounding Gothic cathedral and its modern 1997 Guggenheim Museum that sports a glass façade with lime stones and titanium. This museum is an astounding 20th century avant-garde architecture. Bilbao also sports a popular square called “La Plaza” which is an indoor market hall; it is the largest of its kind in Europe that was built only in 1929. The quaint Old Town and the Squares form the best places of visit in Bilbao, villa in spain for any tourists for shopping and feasting with the weekly flea market, folklore and concert performances. Bilbao offers many beautiful historical and modern monuments which include cathedrals, theaters, universities and churches. Modern architecture can be seen with the Torres Isozaki twin towers; this is a 80-meter high tower by Arata Isozaki, a Japanese architect. Another modern architectural piece is Santiago Calatrava’s Zubizuri bridge or the ‘white bridge’. Its shape is like the bloated sail catching the full wind. There is also a subway facility in Bilbao with a very simple and functional design where only concrete, steel and glass are used.Outside Bilbao is one of the declared World Heritage sites called Puente Colgante de Vizcaya. It is located in Portugalete which is the world’s oldest and functioning funicular. This steel construction is the brainchild of Alberto de Palacio, an architect and pupil of famous Gustav Eiffel. Museums There are many museums in Bilbao. Each museum has its own distinct offerings; Guggenheim Museum is the city’s most famous museum. However, the other museums are worth a visit too. The Museum of Fine Arts showcases many great artists’ work while the Maritime Museum exhibits unique information on Basque shipyards. The Basque Museum showcases the local history.
