The Mina and the Umrah

Mina is the place of Ziyarah around the Makkah, Saudi Arabia. It holds the greatest dignity for Muslims to be an important place in regard with the Hajj rituals. The Quran Mina references in the Quran, Surah Baqarah:

“Carry out the remembrance of Allah during the limited days (10th, 11th, 12th and 13th of Dhul Hijjah). There shall be no sin on the person who chooses to hasten (to leave Mina) during the two days (by leaving Mina on the 12th Dhul Hijjah), nor will there be any sin on him who wishes to delay (by leaving Mina on the 13th). For him, who possesses Taqwa, which means throughout the Hajj journey.”

Verbally, the Mina means ‘to flow’ as being the place, where the blood of sacrificial animal flow during the day of Eid Al Adha. According to the traditions, in the Farewel Pilgrimage, the Muslims had brought with them 100 camels to be sacrificed here. The Prophet, peace be upon him, stoned the Jamarat and went back to his camp in Mina where he sacrificed 63 of the camels on the 10th Zill Hijjah. Hazrat Ali R.A, slaughtered the other 37 camels and the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, instructed that a part of each camel is cooked and served with him and his other Companions.

The Muslim pilgrims, after the sacrifice, went for the trimming or shaving of the head. The Mina is a significant place around the Makkah. In Mina there lies a cave known as the ‘Cave of Mursalaat’ as the Surah Mursalaat was revealed when the Prophet (PBUH) was there in that Cave. The pilgrims spend two more days after the 10th Zill Hijjah in the Mina and they stoned the Jamarat as the basic ritual of the Hajj.

Although, visiting Mina is the basic rite during the Hajj and it is not a part and parcel of the Umrah tour, yet the Muslims visit this place as of Ziyarah in the holy tour of the Umrah. Muslims undertake the Umrah as the Sunnat e Muwakadah, as it is not an obligatory part of the Muslim obligation, which are binding to them.
