Having a healthy mouth is without a doubt vital to keeping your overall health in control. Your mouth can give signals about what is happening in the rest of your body. Dental problems are usually easy to prevent and detect. However, there are also a number of dental problems that you have probably never heard of.

1) Temporomandibular Joints (TMJ) Disorders

Although the name of these disorders seems complicated and foreign, the symptoms are actually quite common. When your TMJ is not working properly, you could experience symptoms such as pain near the jaw or ears, clicking in the jaw, or headaches. Therefore, if you experience any of these symptoms do not hesitate to tell your dentist, because they could be related to your TMJ.

2) Dry Mouth

Dry mouth may seem like a relatively simple problem with your dental health, but it can actually lead to a variety of problems. Dry mouth, or xerostomia, occurs when there is not enough saliva in your mouth as a result of certain medications or diseases. This problem is uncomfortable, but the lack of saliva can also lead to bigger, more unknown problems such as tooth decay, difficulty speaking and swallowing, and sore throat. This common problem should be treated seriously because of its lesser known side effects.

3) Teeth Grinding

You have probably heard of teeth grinding as a bad habit, but it is actually a dental problem that should be addressed. Misaligned teeth or sleep disorders cause this uncomfortable problem known as bruxism. Teeth grinding is most common among children and can be outgrown, but do not hesitate to tell your dentist about it because they can provide helpful information to this strange problem. It can severely damage teeth.

4) Enamel Erosion

Put down those sugary drinks, they are so damaging to your enamel! Enamel is the translucent outer covering that protects the tooth. This problem has many causes, and once the enamel has been eroded the damage cannot be undone. Following your dentist’s instructions and taking good care of your teeth can prevent this problem.

5) Oral Cancer

Oral cancer may seem so unusual because it is located in the mouth. Unfortunately, this problem is more common than most people may think. Oral cancer is sometimes categorized as neck and head cancer but is located specifically in the lips, tongue, cheeks and throat. Symptoms include, but are not limited to, patches of red and white, bleeding, and trouble swallowing. Visiting your dentist regularly is extremely important in lowering the risks of oral cancer so detection and treatment can be timely.
