The necessity to protect people and property from explosions and accidents caused due to the overpressure led to the invention of safety valves. Pressure relief valves, as it is also known as, is one of the major discoveries of mankind to evade explosions caused due to steam. In the earlier days, mankind discovered the purpose of boiling water to make steam but it required certain safety devices to avoid over pressure. Several types of devices were invented to prevent explosions. As time passed, man invented the safety valves to be used in ships and locomotives. To prevent dangerous situations, most of the industries follow safety rules and regulations. The main function of these valves includes the protection of life and property. Understanding the Basics of Safety Valves The pressure relief valves are mainly used to prevent the build up of over pressure in plants and boilers. The excess pressure in the plant is reduced in a safe manner when a predetermined pressure level is reached by releasing an amount of fluid from within the plant. This is the main function of the safety valve. It is one of the most vital components to prevent catastrophes and so it is important to ensure that it functions at all times appropriately. It is necessary to install these valves in plants and steam vessels where the working pressure is likely to exceed its limits and thereby cause accidents. Safety valves are also indispensable in protecting the products from damage due to explosions. There are different types of pressure relief valves used in various fields to prevent the mounting pressure from exploding. Valves are designed for industrial uses and domestic purposes. Pressure relief valves are used for steam vessels to evade accidents at home. Therefore it is vital to check the valves before operating plants and steam vessels. Safety valves of different designs and applications can be bought from many of the online dealers listed in the business portals. One of the most conventional designs of pressure relief valves include the spring loaded valves which are quite reliable and act as devices to prevent over pressure. The pressure cookers usually have two types of safety valves. One of the valves is the nozzle with a small hole to place the weight and the second valve is a sealed rubber on the lid which tends to explode when the fist valve gets choked. Safety valves are usually used in heat exchangers and pressure vessels. In industries, the two types pressure relief valves are considered essential to prevent the over build up of pressure. These valves are necessary for thermal and flow protection. For flow protection, the relief valves are considerably larger than the ordinary pressure relief valves. These valves are necessary for releasing huge amounts of gas or fluid to protect the vessel or pipelines. The thermal relief valves are considerably smaller in size and prevent build up of excess pressure. Small valves are used as only a small amount of fluid is discharged while releasing pressure. In short, different types of safety valves are used for various applications depending on the requirement.
