From the beginner to the veteran fresh flour enthusiast, there will always be some tips that are particular to using any new small kitchen appliance. Even though it is user friendly and easy to use, there are a few suggestions on care, use and cleaning of the Nutrimill Grain Grinder that I’d like to share. For home grain milling convenience, the Nutri Mill is by far the best value.
Cleaning – Dry dusting is best to clean the entire Nutri Mill on a regular basis. The shoot and the area above the hopper should be dry dusted before or after each use.
It may be tempting to put the hopper in the dishwasher when cleaning the Nutrimill. I suggest that this not be done. Depending upon the heat of the water and/or the drying coils in the dishwasher the hopper or lid could warp. Although they are both very durable, warping will keep the seal from working properly. The Nutri Mill can simply be wiped off with a dry rag or paper towel, most of the time. It does not need soap and water every time it’s cleaned. I have found that the interior cup and the small round black filters can usually be put in the dishwasher with out any trouble.
After the lid and hopper have been washed with warm soapy water and are completely dry, it is normal for them to be more difficult to twist together again. This small inconvenience is fixed by dusting the lid’s black seal with a light dusting of flour.
Care – If by chance, the NutriMill hopper has already been run through the dishwasher and the seal is not working as well as before, there is a remedy. First, flour the seal as you normally would after it has dried from every washing and place it on the hopper. Do not put the black filter or exhaust cup in place. Warm your oven to 200 degrees fahrenheit. Place the container on a towel that is also on a cookie sheet making sure it sits level. Now place another towel on top and something oven proof to weight down the top until you see there is no space around the seal. We used bricks. Put that whole stack of items in the oven and turn it OFF. Leave it all until it is cooled. Within the next couple of uses, the seal should be back to working order.
Using – The biggest suggestion for using the Nutri Mill is first, read the manual. Next I would suggest that when using it, to always be extra sure the hopper is pushed back to the “YES” marker on the bottom of the tray. From newbie to old hand, this omission will result in a fluffy cloud of flour floating through the house; I have seen it and done it before!
There is no need to run the Nutri Mill on ‘high’ all the time. It will mill at half speed and likely extend the life of your motor. When choosing the coarseness, simply watch your grains as they are going down the top of the mill for a while, if they are going down very fast, you may want to adjust to get finer flour. When milling multiple textures, such as legumes and grains together, the setting should be on the texture that allows the legumes to go through.
