Barking up the Wrong Tree

For many years (maybe twenty), I’ve been of the opinion that the majority of people trying to lose weight, build muscle, increase fitness, improve their health or facilitate any kind of lasting physical transformation (lasting, being the key term here) go about it the wrong way. Which is kind of obvious and logical when you take a look at how many people don’t achieve what they set out to. I’ve also been of the opinion that many alleged health and fitness experts get it wrong too.
Including me at times.

I’m the Problem and the Solution

As an ex-fattie, I learned long ago that mastering my body is an automatic byproduct of mastering my mind and my emotions. In other words, when I get the internal stuff right, the external transformation takes care of itself. While things like diet, dumbbells, treadmills, heart-rate monitors, exercise programs and RDI’s are issues, they are not the issue. When it comes to creating forever results in my world (what we all want), I’m the issue. I’m the problem.

And, I’m the solution.

As a young trainer working on the gym floor, I came to realise that creating lasting physical change has almost nothing to do with the body and everything to do with the person inhabiting it. That is, the non-physical controlling the physical. In most cases, the condition a body is in (fit or unfit, fat or lean, healthy or unhealthy) is simply a consequence of the owner’s thinking, attitudes, beliefs, behaviours and choices. Over time.

Genetic Disposition vs Genetic Management

When you meet me (for example), the body you see in front of you is (largely) a byproduct of my standards, decisions, behaviours and habits. For the most part, the body I currently reside in has a little to do with my genetic disposition (what I’ve been given) and a lot to do with genetic management (what I do with what I’ve been given).

Same goes for you.

Let’s be totally honest, practical and analytical; despite an ever-increasing range of weight-loss, health-improving and body-transforming products, programs, diets and gizmos, our population is getting fatter. We’re not healthier. And seemingly, not smarter. What we’re doing is not working. You don’t need a degree or any special qualification to figure that out. All you need is a pair of eyes.

Maybe We’ve Missed the Point?

Coming from a gym owner, exercise scientist and alleged fitness expert, I’m gonna ruffle a few feathers when I say that – when it comes to the process of transforming a body forever – there’s far too much emphasis on diet, lifestyle and exercise (all the practical physiological stuff) and far too little emphasis on the psychological stuff that drives (or, as is often the case, doesn’t drive) all the physiological and practical variables. Information ain’t transformation, knowing ain’t doing and resources aren’t answers. They’re just resources.

If the ‘total solution’ to our ever-present obesity epidemic was more information, more diets, more gyms, more gurus, more weight-loss centres, more health retreats and more websites like this one then we’d all be trim, taut and terrific. Take a look around and you’ll discover that we’re currently up to our necks in weight-loss resources, transformational tools and fat.

Get your head where it needs to be and your body will follow.
