Triadene is a popular and effective hormonal contraceptive that is also referred to as 'the pill' or combined oral contraceptive pill. The Triadene Pill is composed of two active ingredients, ethinylestradiol and gestodene (third generation progestogen). These are artificial forms of the naturally occurring female sex hormones, oestrogen and progestogen respectively. Triadene is a triphasic pill, meaning that each 21 day pack contains three different dose of hormones in it. The combined pill pack contains six tablets with the composition of 30 micrograms ethinylestradiol and 50 micrograms gestodene, the next five tablets contain 40 micrograms ethinylestradiol and 70 micrograms gestodene, while the rest of the ten tablets contain 30 micrograms ethinylestradiol and 100 micrograms gestodene.
The Triadene pill is taken every day for 21 days, after which there is a seven day break from taking pill. You would be protected from pregnancy during these seven days, but the level of the hormones in your blood keeps dropping, resulting in a withdrawal bleed that seems like your normal period. However, this is just your body's way to get rid of the excess hormones. You need to start the next pack after the seven day break to get complete protection. Combined pills like Triadene work in three ways to override your menstrual cycle. The daily dose of hormones tricks your body into thinking that ovulation has already occurred due to which the release of egg from the ovaries is prevented. The hormones also increase the viscosity of the cervical mucus, which makes it almost impossible for a sperm to enter the womb and reach an egg. They also alter the womb lining (endometrium) so that it is less likely that a fertilised egg would attach itself and grow there.
Triadene pills are not suitable for you if you suffer from certain medical conditions such as heart valve disease, migraines, diabetes, angina or severe liver disease. If you have a history of depression, breast cancer, inflammatory bowel disease or gallstones this pill will not be prescribed to you. It is considered better if you discuss your medical history and any new medication you have started taking with your doctor. It will help them to review whether this medication is safe for you or whether another oral contraceptive might suit you better. This contraceptive not only imitates your natural cycle for preventing conception, but also reduces your PMS symptoms along with reducing the risk of developing cancer of the womb lining and ovaries.
If you vomit within two hours of taking this pill then you should take another pill immediately, as it might not get fully absorbed in your bloodstream. You would be still be protected during this time, but you need to inform your doctor about it for further guidance. However, if your vomiting does not stop before 24 hours, the effectiveness of the pill will be reduced significantly. In that case, you should contact your doctor and continue taking the pill at the normal time. You should stop taking this medication if you experience anything like unusual swelling in legs, coughing up blood, fatigue, numbness on one side of body, stomach pain and yellowing of the skin.
