The Perfect Way to Begin Your Maid of Honor Speeches

When it comes to giving the perfect speech it can all begin within the first few words. Whether you want to keep them laughing or pull their heartstrings you’ll need an opening line that will be memorable and engaging. While there is no wrong or right way to begin this oh, so important task here are a few different ways to open up your speech and help you decide which first impression best fits your personal style.

Quote a favorite line or movie.

Example: “Andrew Breton once said “Love is when you meet someone who tells you something new about yourself.” And I never knew how true this could be until Emma met Alex. The girl who used to sit behind me in Mrs. Brighton’s kindergarten class was always afraid of thunder. Even as teenagers, I remember how Emma would go running for the flashlight at the first crack of lightening. But when Alex came along he taught her to dance in the rain . . . quite literally. I remember seeing the two of you spinning around and around outside your Mom’s front porch . . .”

rnBe light hearted. Poke fun at the bride, groom or yourself.

rnExample: “You know I was kind of mad when Becca stood me up at the Bloomingdale’s sale to go on a first date with Brock. At first I thought she was crazy . . . picking a baseball game over shopping with me but now I can see things clearly. rnShe got a husband and I got a belt.”

Discuss how you felt when you heard the good news.

Example: “When Sue first announced her engagement I thought . . . I’m losing my best friend. But as I got to know Mark one thing became very clear, I was not losing a best friend, I was gaining an extra.”

Ask a Rhetorical Question.

rnExample: “What do you think ladies and gentlemen? I prepared two different speeches because I couldn’t decide if I wanted to be nice or if I wanted to see these two turn a different shade. What shade of red do you want their faces to turn?
