Powder flowability is the study of the behavior of powder as it flows and how it settles. Powder is a type of granular material which, though made up of individual solid particles, exhibits flow properties like a liquid but with a vast difference. Study of this is important in the design of powder handling equipment in factories and mills where they deal with powder and this is important so that ultimately in these factories and mills, there is no downtime because one did not calibrate one's machinery and equipment to accommodate the aberrant nature of powders. A sneak peek into the various phenomena these powder particles exhibit: - The stress in a powder when it is at rest is not uniform. It is borne along force chains or networks of the individual particles. These networks intermingle with spaces of low stress due to arching and the vaulting of the individual particles. - Jamming transition is seen due to the same arching process of the particles. - Pattern formation is an inherent feature of granular particles in the excited state. - They also produce acoustic effects such as grains in silo honking. So, flow instruments are designed to study all these features and make an approximation of the output in applications such as the pharmaceutical industry, the food industry, and many other industrial applications where the raw material or the finished material is in the powder form. Flow measurement is the process of measuring fluid in the industrial plant. Flow measurement of granular material is known as rheology and the methods are different from normal fluids. Powder flowability is the freedom with which powder flows under specific conditions of pressure, humidity, and the nature of the equipment. Powder Flow Instruments and powder flow tester is a flow instrument that analyze the powder under different conditions as mentioned above. There are two kinds of flowability testers, dynamic and static. - Dynamic testers measure flow properties (the testers double up as measurement devices too) as the powder is moving or about to. This is known as a Revolution Powder Analyzer. - Static testers measure the powder that is not moving and is exposed to some pressure. There are two of these- the Evolution powder tester and the Volution Powder Flow Tester. Both flow measurement devices are needed to analyze the powder fully, and anyone to pinpoint the reason for a problem. They are available online and the company's manufacturing them provide testing services in standard test packages to provide information for any usual powder handling issues the client may have.
