Is initial attraction and sexual arousal really only skin deep? Beyond visual appeal, there’s a subconscious scientific magnetism happening that may affect the physical desirability of those around us. Whether we realize it or not, most women and men are deeply affected by the natural pheromones that we are constantly emitting. Just follow your nose – it always knows!
Of course body odor can be terribly offensive at times, so we should do our best to maintain good hygiene. But, rather than trying to cover up our natural scent with heavy perfumes and artificial fragrances, we should allow our organic aroma to capture the attention of our mate or potential lover. Our natural pheromones can be an extremely powerful way to attract a partner or stimulate sexual arousal with your significant other. We use most or all of our senses when we are evaluating a person or situation, and believe it or not, our sense of smell is exceptionally influential in our reasoning processes. The scent our bodies emit can either be totally repulsive or extremely appealing, and may drastically vary in preference depending on the individual.
The term “pheromone” was introduced in the 1950’s based on the Greek word pherein (to transport) and hormone (to stimulate). These chemical messengers are transported outside of the body and result in a direct developmental effect on hormone levels or behavioral change. Many animals (including humans) can actually communicate with pheromones on a subliminal level, as these natural chemicals inherently produced and secreted are capable of impacting the behavior of others and trigger specific social responses. Sex pheromones indicate the availability of the female for breeding, as males can instinctively determine if a female is ovulating, or “in heat”. Pheromones may also convey specific information about their species and genotype, hence why dogs sniff the genitals of other dogs to ascertain detailed biological information. Some species of animals release sex pheromones to attract a mate, which can be detected from several miles away.
Few well-controlled scientific studies have ever been published suggesting the possibility of how pheromones can biologically affect other humans. The best known case involves the synchronization of menstrual cycles among women based on unconscious odor cues. This study exposed a group of women to a whiff of perspiration from other women. It was found that it caused their menstrual cycles to speed up or slow down depending on the time in the month the sweat was collected; before, during, or after ovulation. Therefore, this study proposed that there are two types of pheromone involved: One produced prior to ovulation, shortens the ovarian cycle; and the second, produced just at ovulation, can lengthen the cycle.
Women have to work harder than men in order to sweat, as men are more effective sweaters during exercise, according to new research published in the journal of Experimental Physiology. Men produce more and stronger body odor than women because androgens are the predominant sex hormone in males. Men that engage in more physical activity naturally increase their level of testosterone, which intensifies the emission of pheromones. Active males tend to have a stronger sex-drive, are healthier in general, and have a much greater sex appeal. This is also true for more physically active females as well, as men are able to perceive a woman’s pheromones from her bodily scent – especially in the pubic area. So don’t be too conce
ed about the way you think you may smell down there, as it may actually be quite desirable and delicious for a man to enjoy.
