Polypropylene is a very versatile thermoplastic polymer that is used in several different types of applications. One can find it being used in textiles, foam, packaging products, ropes, and even filtration material. A polypropylene filter is preferred for several reasons. The most important one is that the minute pores of polypropylene are capable of trapping a number of impurities. These filters are widely used in clarifying beverages, and other fluids.
Polypropylene is a chemically stable material that doesn’t readily react with other chemicals and substances. Furthermore, it can be manufactured in a way that makes it resistant to different types of acids and solvents, if so required. It is also odorless, making it the filtration material of choice for a number of applications. In fact, it is widely used in cosmetic applications such as face masks too! This material is usually processing using techniques such as extrusion and molding.
In this article, we shall focus on the uses and advantages of a polypropylene filter. The fiber used for making such filters is obtained by melt-blowing or spin-bonding. These methods are capable of producing very fine fibers that are rolled together and further processed to obtain the desired product. Most filters made from polypropylene can be categorized as non-woven. Here are some defining attributes of these filters:
- They can be used for the filtration of several different materials such as gases, liquids, and even air.
- Since the melting point of polypropylene is higher as compared to several other types of plastics, filters made from polypropylene can be used for high-temperature applications too.
- Since polypropylene is such a versatile material, it can be formed into discs, funnels, cartridges or even plain filtration layers. The shape of the filter is usually determined by its respective application.
- The material can be manipulated to achieve different pore sizes. The pore sizes are measured in a unit known as a micrometer. The pores typically range from 0.45 to 120 microns.
- A polypropylene filter finds several applications in industrial filtration processes. Since it shows excellent resistance to a wide variety of chemicals, it can be used in the chemical processing industry.
- It can also be safely used in the food and beverage sector as FDA approved filters can be procured from reputable brands. They can also be used for the filtration of detergents, and other liquids.
- Such filters can be used for temperature ranges up to 90 degrees. The only caution to be exercised while using these filters is to avoid exposing them to oxidizing agents. Other than that, these filters are highly versatile and can be used almost anywhere.
