The Role of a Principal in a School

Whenever we recall our school days we never miss thinking of our school principal. The principal is one of the busiest people in a school. It is the principal who takes sole charge of the administration of the school and manages everything anytime, even at the time of any sort of crisis in the school. Principals in the schools are selected on the basis of their seniority while they still function as teachers in the school. In the independent schools in Scotland, principals are called “rectors”. Though in the schools of North America and Ireland the heads of School are called School Principals only, in some of the schools they are also called Headmasters or Headmistresses. In some small city schools and a few rural schools, the principals are called Headmasters.

A Principal is the title given to the Head administrator of any primary school, secondary school or high school in many of the English speaking countries such the United States, Australia and India. But abroad in the US, the title principal is given to the head of the public schools whereas in private schools of the United Schools, they usually use the term Head of School for principals. But books and documents of the early days of the education system in the United States say that the title that was originally used for the head of the school was a Principal Teacher. The roles of Principals in schools vary from country to country. In many countries, apart from taking care of the entire management of the school, a principal also acts as a teacher, though they are assisted by their subordinates such as vice-principals and other senior teachers to handle the responsibility of the entire school. But when it comes to the reputation of the school, it is the principal who is given compliments or even criticized for upgrading or degrading the position of the school.
