The Scene in Lagos

Lagos is the largest city in Nigeria and the center of the country’s economy. It enjoys the position of being the gateway for West Africa and is home to one of the most modern airports in the African continent. In addition, it is an important hub of business, finance and commerce and is developing extremely rapidly. Lagos is the third most populous city in Africa behind Cairo and Kinshasa, the second fastest growing city in Africa and seventh fastest in the world. It is estimated to become the third largest mega city in the world behind Tokyo and Mumbai in years to come. Flights to Lagos are in high demand all around the globe and taken up by holidaymakers, foreign investors and people searching for better jobs and lifestyles. The city is a highly developed and prosperous settlement. In the ancient times, the area now defined as Lagos was the habitat of aboriginal African tribes. During the European colonization, it became an important region because of its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. The port city enjoyed trade and commerce and began to develop. However, it Lagos was never as prosperous as it is today. After the Europeans left Nigeria, the governments of the country laid great emphasis on Lagos’ development because it is the most important port city in the country and its financial capital. Even before the oil boom in Nigeria Flight Lagos were popularly taken up by foreign investors and businessmen, something which most other cities in the country could not enjoy. Today, along with being a business hub, Lagos is also the entertainment capital of Nigeria. It is home to country’s film, fashion and music industries and boasts addresses for fine dining as well as clubs, bars and discos. The city’s nightlife has been much hyped and it truly an exciting one. Having grown from a rural tribal settlement into a world class metropolis, Nigeria’s largest city has a culture which has been one of the major reasons for tourism here. Lagosian aura can be defined as quite cosmopolitan in an African way. The modern African life, as seen here, is really very impressive. In contrast, Abuja is a city which was built purposely not only to serve as Nigeria’s administrative capital but also a settlement where beggars would not be allowed and the cost of living would be so high that only the elites would care to live there. It is thus, not much appreciated and has been termed by tourists as rather faked out and made up. Lagos, on the other hand, has a very genuine environment which is lively, quite African and yet pretty Europeanized and comprises of a sharp contrast of very posh and very poor. Flights to Lagos brings to sight, things to explore which are not seen anywhere else.
