Discus Event has been conducted and played for several centuries now. It all started during the ancient Greek period as they first invented and nourished the sport. Originally it was just another athletic experience until recent times in the last century or so where it was re-energized as a part of Olympic Games. Track and field consists of considerable amount of events. Olympic Games are considered to be a glorious event and every country invariably seeks to gain that glory of victories. Over 32 countries participate every 4 years and they try to grab as many gold medals as possible to claim a glorious status.
Every Country takes a lot of pride in the participation and every athlete representing his/her country practices a lot harder for years just for a day’s event. Track events consist of 100, 200, 400 meters dash and the relay events. Field events consist of long jump, high jump, shot-put, discus throw, gymnastics, weight lifting, shooting etc.
Discus throw involves a rounded disk made of wood enclosed with a metallic rim on the outer edge. The weight of the discus varies according to the gender of the athlete. For men athletes the discus weighs about 2kgs and has a width of 22cms. For women the discus weighs about 1kg and the width of it is not more than 21cms. The scoring opportunities are given and the best throw amidst them is considered as your final score. Experienced athletes are capable of throwing more than 70 meters on a regular basis.
The rule states that the player cannot touch the exte
al region of circular disc but can touch within the enclosed outer metallic rim. Participants are not allowed to move out of the throwing circular parameter until the discus lands after the throw and the distance is recorded. IN order to protect the viewers the whole event is conducted inside an enclosed area. The structure of the enclosed area is pretty strong and designed in such a manner that the disc will not even rebound and injure the athlete.
Accurate footwork is very essential to create a potential throw. This footwork also helps you to feed in the speed to give it more elevation and distance. You ought to practice by using standing throw drills before you attempt to officially start throwing the discus. The non-throwing should be used under the disc to support your throw and balance. The shoulder should be straight and not hunched back whilst the breadth of it should coincide with your wide feet. It should be at the backside of the circle and the posture should be in such a way that your waist should be slightly bent while you attempt the throw. Transfer your body weight on your left foot if you are a right hander and vice versa for a left hander and rotate your shoulder along the direction as you release the throw.
