Roger Dawson is known as a real estate master and motivational speaker. He's been speaking professionally in public for almost three decades. Before his public speaking career commenced, he employed up to 540 people in 28 different offices, as a real estate master. If you've bought a home or another piece of property, you know that a lot of the process involves plenty of negotiation. Besides real estate, negotiating is an art many of us have to practice on a daily basis, incessantly, such that it's so ubiquitous we may not even realize we are doing it. Some of us are successful at negotiating, and some of us not so much. Have you ever known someone who seems to get whatever he or she wants from life, while others struggle with poor relationships, stalled careers, and more? Perhaps you know someone who is simply "unlucky," such that they simply can't get a break. Maybe they pay much more than they have to for cars or houses, or have other situations where they simply are "left out." These are the people that need to know about negotiation skills. A great book for people who need to learn this is Roger Dawson's The Secrets of Power Negotiating. In fact, even if you're already good at negotiating, this can take your skills to a new level. In this book, you'll be taught how to negotiate in a variety of situations. When you negotiate, you pay attention to two angles: your own angle, and the other person's angle. Dawson's approach is that negotiations are truly successful when both parties feel like they've won. Both parties leave negotiations, in other words, feeling as though they've gotten what they came for. However, Mr. Dawson goes a step further in his book, The Secrets of Power Negotiating, in that he teaches the reader to make the other person feel as though he or she has won the negotiation, feeling satisfied. Dawson's approach is to make the other person feel as though he or she has come out ahead, even if you're the one who's really gained. When you're successful with negotiations that are slanted in your favor, can make them occur without making any enemies, you know you've mastered the skill of negotiating at its utmost. In the corporate world, you can also use Dawson's book to improve profits, and create leverage. If you're a manager, learn how to become the best leader in your organization. Dawson's book goes far beyond boardroom focus, however. Every one of us has to learn how to negotiate to some extent, even if we don't realize we're doing it. Kids negotiate with parents, adults negotiate with other "authority figures," and so on. Because of this, the book is invaluable for parents who want to learn to guide their children, so that they raise their children fairly but nonetheless with the authority they deserve in their children's lives. Negotiating skills can also help you lower prices when you haggle for bargains, but by and large, these negotiations are going to make others feel good, so that when you use them, you improve your social status and standing. Roger Dawson has dealt with people for many years and has learned how to relate to them. He knows what makes people tick. He's mastered the tips and techniques that allow others to get their way, while leaving the opposite party feeling good about what just happened. Rather than making others feel like they've been manipulated or with a "bad taste in their mouths," his approach is on focusing how to teach you to be shrewd, and how to get the benefits from life that are available to you when you can do that.

While I was waiting for my dance class to start, I watched an instructor patiently coach a couple through what was obviously one of their first lessons. The instructor was having them do a “box step,” which is what it sounds like. A “box” made with your feet. It consists of two parts, a forward half box and a backward half box. Each half box has three steps: a step forward or backward, a step to the side, and a step to close the feet together. The instructor was counting out
