Many people spend their day busily doing nothing and accomplishing very little. Without goal planning you will continue to have stressful days filled with conflicts incomplete tasks. At home, I have found myself getting distracted with “busy-work” instead of getting that home improvement project done. Yet I’m often wondering where the time went. Sometimes there are even bigger distractions at my workplace. There are phone calls, data requests, talkative employees, and a whole host of issues that pop up out of the blue. Unfortunately time is something we can’t get once it’s spent. So how does one manage the detractors and other time wasters? The following time management secrets will show you how to accomplish everything that you set out to do and more: Create a proactive to-do list. There’s nothing wrong with having a to-do list. In fact effective time management requires it. The physical act of putting down or writing a goal makes it actual and tangible. However the problem that I’ve seen is that sometimes these lists are an accumulation of things that need to get done. Basically some lists are places where the things-to-do go to die. Prioritize and designate a date of completion for each task and aggressively accomplish them. You’ll have no justification for forgetting about it. As you compose the list use the word "will" rather than "want to" or "may". Stop Procrastinating. Procrastination is that little monster that’s living rent-free in your head. He’s a dream stealer and de-motivator. Evict him as soon as possible! The best way to defeat it is to admit that you are a procrastinator. Next, you need to figure out why. One reason people tend to put off a task is that that simply don’t like what they’re doing. Being unorganized is another reason. Once you know why you procrastinate you can formulate a plan to stop the behavior. Stop the Workplace and Home Distractions. At the office, move out visitors chairs to discourage co-workers from making themselves comfy. Don't draw out a conversation or do anything to extend a disruption. If somebody visits your desk or calls you to their office, stand. It's less comfy to have a conversation while standing and they tend to be shorter as a consequence. At home, ask acquaintances to call before they show up. You’re not being rude, as I said before; once time is spent you can’t get it back. Schedule “me” time. This is the time where you close your door, post the Do Not Disturb Sign, and take care of those items on your list. You should likewise schedule time where you're available to see people (or spend time with family). Once you train people, they'll soon get used to the idea that you're only available between a certain hours of the day. Utilize Voice Mail/Email. Encourage the use of voice mail and email instead of perpetually being disturbed. Then you’ll be able to respond back at your convenience. rnThere are many factors that come in to play for effective time management. By identifying your weaknesses and applying these secrets you will see a dramatic increase in productive and have extra time to spend doing the things you enjoy.
