- Basal body temperature The lowest temperature of the body during a 24-hour period, by principle not influenced by body activities, is the basal body temperature. Ovulation usually causes a rise of about 0.25 to 0.5 degrees Celsius( 0.5 to 1 degrees Fahrenheit). Body activities such as movements and eating produce heat that influence the temperature of the body so it is often measured first thing in the morning. rnThe basal body temperature is measured with a specific type of thermometer and recorded on the chart.
- Cervical mucus This is another accurate and useful sign of ovulation that women could monitor. Cervical mucus is the secretion produced by the glands of the cervix. The amount and consistency( or texture) of the mucus is influenced by hormones. At ovulation, the high levels of estrogen make the mucus to increase in amount and become watery, clear and stretchy or "thready". Women often describe this as looking like the white of an egg. You can stretch it between your thumb and the index finger.
- Position of the Cervix During the follicular phase preceding ovulation, the cervix is relatively lower in the vaginal canal and the little entrance into it called the os, is closed. You can easily feel it without getting deep into the vagina.rnDuring the moment of ovulation, the cervix is relatively higher that before and the entrance called the os is open. Not as good for most women as compared to the first two.
- Mid-cycle bleeding This is mild vaginal bleeding or spotting( blood taint on paint) that occurs during the period of ovulation. It usually does not require any treatment. It is caused by the hormonal changes that occur around the moment of ovulation.
- Mid cycle pain(Ovulation pain) This is lower abdominal pain that occurs at the time of ovulation. It is due to the release of the ovum and surrounding fluid into the pelvic cavity. It is usually mild and respond to simple pain killers if medications are ever needed.
- Increased libido Many women report an increase in their sexual desire as ovulation approaches.
- Attractiveness Studies have shown that woman subtly improve their attractiveness, especially facial, during the period of ovulation. Some reports have claimed that the body odor of women similarly becomes attractive during this period.
