For thousands of years, local doctors and medicine men have known the value derived from the oil that comes from natural plants in a given area. They have used it for various purposes. It has healed a wide range of ailments, and made people feel better and more relaxed even when they weren’t severely sick or unhealthy. But when it comes to aromatherapy, essential oils play a crucial role. A common concern for elderly people, and even their younger counterparts, is insomnia. The inability to fall asleep at night leads to increased stress, anxiety, confusion, and even aggressiveness the following day. One contributing cure is the essence of lavender, the oil derived from that plant, but it has to be specifically the right kind, because actually there are types of lavender which can aggravate insomnia. Be careful! But when done right, and when combined in small part with a few other essential oils, lavender can help put people to sleep sooner, thereby making them happier and more calm the following day. Be sure to use the right amount of drops of each oil, and be careful that the oil you’re using is in fact the right one, and you’ll be surprisingly pleased with the results! Quite amazingly, oils can be used in part to mitigate the harmful effects of dementia. It’s hard to say exactly what the ill effects of dementia are because it affects people in various degrees, but, once again, the smell of lavender has a calming effect on dementia patients who were reported as behaving unruly when the lavender wasn’t there. This is combined with frankincense to produce a little medley which is more potent. But, again, be sure to get the right kind and the right amount of each. This combination won’t reverse the dementia wholesale, but it can ameliorate the aggressive behaviours when dementia patients act out against their caregivers because they become confused or upset. It’s a tragic scene to imagine, but the calming smells of aromatherapy can have a real effect if administered properly. You can buy already put together blends made especially to address these conditions, and that way you can be assured that they are balanced properly with the right ingredients. In addition to lavender, you will find chamomile, marjoram, bergamot, geranium, mandarin orange, and others depending on the purpose. If you have any questions, consult an expert or somebody experienced in aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is a resurgent means of recuperation because it is simple and overwhelmingly pleasant. It draws on an ancient form of medicine older than the Western style hospitals, with their bureaucracies and wait lines. Don’t think of it as a replacement, necessarily, but it is a very nice way to try and take the cure into your own hands. If you can mitigate the ill effects of a condition you’re suffering from in your own home by means of pleasant aromas, what can possibly be the harm? Try it, and you may be amazed.
