Fortunately, a number of anti snoring devices are available to ease nighttime breathing and reduce snoring. Here is a look at the uses of these devices for those who choose this path to better sleep.
Snoring Pillows
Snoring is sometimes caused by obstruction of the airway related to an inappropriate head angle during sleep. Specially designed anti-snoring pillows prop up the head or upper body to keep the airway open throughout the night. Other pillows work by making it less likely that the user will sleep on his or her back, the position that is most associated with difficult breathing and snoring.
Nasal Strips
When the nose is clogged during sleep due to allergies or other reasons, mouth breathing becomes necessary and can cause snoring. To prevent this from happening, many people use adhesive nasal strips. These rigid strips, which are placed over the bridge of the nose, pull the nostrils open and allow easier nasal breathing all night. While these are effective anti snoring devices for some, they may not be enough for the those with long-term severe snoring.
Snoring Mouthpiece
In some cases, snoring is caused by the collapse of the tongue or lower jaw into the airway and the resultant reduction in airflow. Oral appliances prevent this from happening by keeping the tongue and lower jaw from falling backward. These devices are also sometimes effective for those with mild sleep apnea, but they can take some time to adjust to.
Chin Straps
When the chin falls open during sleep, mouth breathing ensues and the lower jaw and tongue may fall into the airway, causing snoring. By wearing a chin strap designed to keep the lower jaw in place at night, snoring and mild sleep apnea can sometimes be prevented. Many chin straps are designed with CPAP users in mind, but they are still effective for others.
With regular use, anti snoring devices can improve relationships with spouses and significant others thanks to a decrease in nighttime disturbances. Daytime sleepiness is reduced while performance and quality of life are improved. Many snorers have the best results by combining a few of the devices mentioned above and optimizing sleep hygiene in general. This can include avoiding food for hours before bed, relaxing before sleep and creating comfort and darkness in the bedroom. Ultimately, reducing snoring is an effective way to improve not only day-to-day life but long-term health as well.
