The Various Kinds of Washers and Their Uses
Washers are metallic or non-metallic discs between a nut and its bearing or in a joint. You can say a washer is a thin plate with a hole in them. This plate distributes the load from a nut or a screw uniformly.

We may use washers as spacers or preload indicators also. They find a use for taking up wear and as a locking device. Another use of washers is to reduce or dampen vibration. Washers are of plastic, rubber, or metal. In bolted jointed, high-quality steel washers find a use in preventing loss of preload after we have applied the torque. Rubber and gasket washers help to stem the flow of water in plumbing applications. Another important use is to stop corrosion such as when we use steel screws that contact aluminum surfaces.

The plain washer helps to spread the load in a jointed connection. We use it to prevent damage to the surface where you make the joint. Also, we may use it to provide insulation when there is an electrical connection. It is mainly used when the hole is larger in diameter than the fixing nut.
Uses of fender washersr
A fender washer is another kind of washer with a large outer diameter. The central hole is small It finds a use to spread the load on a thin metal surface such as on automobile fenders. If there is a hole that has plenty of wear or rust and becomes big, then we may use a fender washer to make a connection.
A spherical washer comes with a self-aligning nut and has a one-radiused surface. We use this in conjunction with a mating nut in order to make corrections of several degrees. This corrects the misalignment between the parts. A penny washer has a large diameter. It is small but has a large OD. In the UK, they refer to all large OD washers as penny washers.
Types of spring washersr
Cupped spring washers are also known as conical washers or Belleville washers. It has a slight conical shape that deforms when we tighten it. This deformation gives a slight axial force in the joint. Like this is the wave washer that produces a wave force in the axial direction. This produces spring pressure when we tighten it. Wave washers do not exert as much force as a Belleville washer. A split washer is a spring locker with a split ring. It has a helical shape that helps to exert pressure on the joint. The washer presses the washer hard against the substrate. Spring washers are a left-hand helix thereby we can only tighten this in the right-hand direction. If we turn it to the left side, the raised edge will bite into the surface and that will stop the fastener from getting tight.
