The varying looks of a basement
Why ignore your basement when you are doing up the rest of your home. If you are working on design your basement, you should know that there are a range of flooring options for you to look at. The most common sources of inspiration are interior magazines and of course the Internet. If you would like to see real samples of flooring, then visiting a store would be in order.
Most basements come with concrete slabs as this provides for a strong base. You can make use of this as your basic flooring or you could top it up with a range of materials. You can make your choice based on past experiences and the mistakes of neighbors and friends, which often works out in your favor. If you have a dry basement, then painting directing onto the concrete surface will give you a unique floor. You can even let your kids lose on this painting project. Just make sure to use an epoxy based paints. You can easily pick up kits for the same.
Since you don’t need a primer, you can let your imagination run while on your basement flooring. Make use of some painting styles and textures. You could think of starting with a relatively neutral shade in narrow strokes and then add in colors randomly. If you have a white or an off-white base to work with, then you could think of using your sponge with black paint to create the look of natural stone being used.
Another option would be to line your basement floor with carpet. These are available in a range of colors, textures and shades and you are bound to find one that will suit your tastes. Besides providing great looks and cushioning to your floor, it will also provide you with much needed insulation in rough weather. It is also great for noise reduction and the room can then be used by youngsters for their garage band or you could use it as an additional playroom for the kids.
If you want something that is truly unique, then you could consider using bamboo or cork or other such rare materials. Recycled customized rubber is another option. It can easily be laid and removed without the least bit of damage to your floors. This is especially good if you are renting the space out to boarders.
Tiles are another great option for those who can afford it. In all, the basement is one space that you can customize based on what you have on hand.
