It is essential to realize as a parent that substance abuse problems can lead to other serious issues including, but not limited to, suicide, teenage pregnancy, diseases, homelessness, prostitution, stealing, gambling, incarceration, and even death. What seems like some innocent teenage experimentation could be a more serious problem which warrants your intervention. When it comes to trying to determine if your teen is in trouble, start by comparing their previous behavior to their current behavior. Most teens begin to exhibit extreme mood and behavior changes when they start abusing drugs and alcohol. Quite a few parents describe it as if their child has left and something or someone has taken over. If this is what you're experiencing this is a pretty clear indication that something is amiss in your child's life. Tackle the problem head on and talk to your teenager. Do not shout or scream and certainly do not start making any sort of accusations. Come right out and tell your teenager that you are concerned about him or her, and you’re worried. Then, go on to carefully explain just why you’re concerned and cite specific examples. Detail the changes in mood or behavior which are causing you concern, such as falling school grades, to demonstrate the reason for your concern. Explain carefully that any substance abuse is a problem which needs to be confronted and dealt with and that your objective is simply to help. It may be an upward battle to even get your teen to discuss these issues with you but over time it can help you to direct them to a better place. Seeking out information about how to deal with a teen with substance abuse problems from a trained professional is the best way to ensure that you are doing all you can to help your child in need. Push enough to let them know you care but be careful not to push too hard. During this time of crisis they need to know that you are there for them no matter what. The prospect of your teenager getting into drugs can be terrifying, but the secret to dealing with the problem is to stay calm, get to the root of the problem as quickly as you can and then get professional help. Doing this without making the issue about you is paramount.
