A lot has been written and spoken about the “Law of Attraction” – some of it pure nonsense – like the quote on Larry King Live that similar energies repel (an old wives’ tale of like attracting like) – some of it more closely related to the truth of the laws of quantum physics that state without a shadow of a doubt that energy is responsive to energy. In other words, how you invest your energy evokes a response from energy in general. This is elegantly borne out by the Washington DC experiment organized by a US meditation organization and Stanford University in June and July 1993. You can see the amazing results, graphically presented, on the US Federal Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy’s website – as more calm people congregated in a Washington convention centre, so the rate of violent crime dropped in a predictable and correlated fashion.
This brings me to the key points that I want to explore in this article in relation to the so-called Law of Attraction. Universal energy does respond to our energy – often subtly, often imperceptibly, because, more often than not, the energetic input of the normal person into creating their lives is miniscule. The normal person only invests 1% of their energy in the here and now – the only place where the universe exists and is capable of responding. Psychology tells us that the vast majority of the normal person’s energy is “invested” in past experience, mainly related to the formative years. This is way normal people, putting very little into the creation of the life they might want, get a life that is mundane, repetitive and, at best, not too bad.
OK – let’s say you’re abnormal and you know how to invest your energy into what you want out of life. You might have a note of some sort stuck on your refrigerator, you might have a vision board hanging in your bedroom, you might have written down what you want in language that your inner self, your subconscious mind, understands, you might be constantly meditating with specific outcomes in mind. So, you’re stacking the cards in your favour – but do you actually know that you’re sure that you want what you’re looking for?
You can be assured that if you so stack the cards in your favour that what you invest your mental and spiritual energy in is far more likely to come about – as long as you don’t get in its way by wondering when it’s going to happen or contradicting yourself by entertaining useless self-destructive thoughts. But, from my own experience and anecdotal evidence from many of my clients, getting what you thought you want isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Also, many of my clients strive very hard – and pay the price in terms of work life balance – to achieve what they want to achieve.
Getting what you want should be effortless. But it strikes me that the majority of people, thinking that they know best what’s best for them, are not prepared to go with life’s flow – I don’t use this term in the “surrender to fortune” sense, I mean it in the scientific sense as coined by the University of Chicago – energy flows, when you’re in tune with your energy and universal energy, you’re in flow – it’s like being “in the zone”. If you’re in flow, what’s best for you will flow too – you could call it the river of life, taking you, effortlessly, to where and what’s the very best for you. But most people are breaking their backs trying to swim against the tide, killing themselves trying to swim upstream to achieve goals that, through the normal conditioning of the human mind, the think they want. Oftentimes these goals relate to money, wealth or so-called financial freedom. Is your life not about just a little more than that?
You’ve got to let go – of the normal preoccupation with money, of the idea that you think you know what’s best for you, of any specific outcomes (because if you give something or someone the power to make you happy – you also give them the power to make you unhappy) – you’ve got to go with life’s flow – not once in a while, but as much of the time as possible. Being in flow – a clear and present state of mind – puts you in direct present touch with responsive universal energy. That “flow” opens your mind to the opportunities that normal people, blinded by their own notions for themselves, cannot see. But more than that, a clear and present state of mind creates its own opportunities and it is this process that can take your life to places that the normal mind could never imagine.
To sum up, tying yourself down to defined goals is selling yourself short – how would you know the wonders that life might hold for you. You need to leap outside your normal frame of reference, become clear and present and in flow. This is not a leap of faith, this is the most practical thing anyone can do because, in doing so, you become present to the here and now – the place in which you, free from useless thought or preconceived notion, can be at your most effective, your most productive, your most impressive and your most enlightened. You’ll find the river of life flowing fast in the present moment.
