Identity theft falls under the category of fraud. It is making use of someone’s identity for personal gain; credits or benefits can be taken from the said individual. It is synonymous with identity fraud, impersonation and identity cloning. Identity fraud is definitely a CRIME. In 1998, the Identity Theft and Assumption Deterrence Act was presented by the United States Congress. This law forbids any unauthorized use of some other person’s identity or personal information that is meant to commit a violation of any Federal or State Law. The offender will be sentenced to a maximum term of 15 years in prison and penalties. Every person must be armed with the knowledge on how to prevent identity theft. Social Security Numbers, credit card numbers, and account numbers should be properly protected. Do not carry those in your wallet or even give them out except if its required. Documents that have your personal information needs to be destroyed when you don't use it anymore. Shredders work well in destroying documents. Never place your payments as outbound postal mail. The mail is the most vulnerable element in identity fraud. Guarding your mail can be done simply by using a locking mailbox. Phising is a fraud in which companies that appear genuine send phony emails with the idea of obtaining your personal information. This scam is becoming more frequent lately. The internet can be very dangerous. Whenever you order products on the internet, make sure that the site is secure before you decide to give out your credit card number. Whenever you eat out, never let the waiter or someone else carry your plastic card, the time it will take for you to personally pay the bill can save you from years of expensive and difficult credit debts.By no means give your personal information through the phone where it can be easy for others to pretend to be someone they're not. At the same time,restrict access to your computer. Security passwords must be utilized so that you can protect your data files from getting viewed by others. When withdrawing cash via an ATM machine, be wary of people who are shoulder surfing. They may easily get a hold of your PIN number. There's no harm in being extra careful at present. With the economy in the doldrums, more and more people resort to identity theft. That is why, identity criminals just like dangerous phantoms are lurking in the shadows, meticulously selecting and planning for their next victim. Hence be cautious, you don't want to end up with enormous debt, right? You particularly wouldn't want to go to prison for a crime you did not commit!
