What if it were true that there is only "one Soul on the planet at a time"? How would this notion effect you? Would it change the way you live? Would it help you see others in a different light?
Most of us have a common belief or understanding that we are in some way interconnected. However, we still go about our business and busy lives as if we are completely separate and unique from everyone else.
But what if there really is only one Soul on the planet at a time. Would it cause us to live our lives differently? Would we see our neighbors, family and friends... even our enemies in a different, more compassionate way?
I've never been one who simply believes in something without question. When I learn of a new and intriguing idea, before I jump right into believing it I'll experiment with it for a while. Experimenting with new self empowering techniques is a great way to test new theories, concepts and ideas. It can provide you with an opportunity to see if a particular concept or thought pattern is actually going to benefit your life.
I've been experimenting with various self help techniques for many years. When a new idea stirs up an "ah-ha moment" - I take that idea out for a spin so to speak. Trying out a self help technique before you actually buy into it's belief can provide you with the necessary information to determine whether it will improve your life or your understanding. Experimenting with ideas can be fun and even sometimes challenging but the rewards often prove to be positive. You'll also discover that some ideas just don't fit well into your life so you'll be able to cross them off your belief list.
I challenge you to a little thought experiment. Temporarily incorporate into your daily life the idea that there is only one Soul on the planet at a time and it's mine. This thought experiment is going to take some tenacity and courage. You'll probably observe behavior that you'll not enjoy seeing or traits that you won't want to admit are in you but if you stick with it, you can uncover emotions and feelings that are holding you back from true happiness and independence.
This little experiment can prove to be one of the most important things you do for yourself and the rest of the planet. When we make a conscious effort to grow or heal something in ourselves, the rest of the world follows suite and begins to consciously do the same. Don't fret if at first all you see are negative traits in yourself and others. Sooner or later you will start to see the wonderful qualities that exist both in you and the rest of the world. This new concept can also bring up more feelings of compassion and understanding.
Let's begin. For a week or two envision only one soul on the planet and that Soul is "yours". To do this, when you are at the grocery store, bank, particularly when you're at work, church or meetings, watching TV, interacting with your children, talking or even arguing with your spouse, walking your dog, driving or any other activity where you encounter people - contemplate that the individual you are seeing or interacting with is actually "you" ~ at least at the Soul level. No matter if they are displaying positive or negative traits, experiment with the idea that you are watching your own self/Soul. Do this with everyone you speak to, listen to, watch and touch for at least one full week, preferably two. See what this little experiment will do for you and your understanding of yourself and others.
How can your contemplation upon "one Soul on the planet at a time and it is mine" effect you and your life?
While watching individuals and holding the thought in mind of "one Soul at a time and it is mine" - try to see this person no longer being separate from you. Their actions are your actions. Try to feel what they are feeling but only observe. Make no judgments or criticisms. Just watch and listen while holding the thought in your mind... "one Soul on the planet at a time and it's mine". While preforming this experiment, I discovered that watching without judgment or criticism fostered feelings of familiarity and unity.
But what about the times when you see negative behavior in others? While you continue to hold in your mind and heart the thought pattern of "one Soul and it's mine", observe the behavior of this person (you). Their behavior is just that... behavior... and only serves as an outlet for any internal hurt or pain to come through. You will need to look past their actions and recognize the energy. You can only do this when there is no judgments or condemnation coming from you.
An example might be: You're at the grocery store and you come upon a man or woman in the checkout line. He or she is spewing angry energy complaining about everything to anyone who will listen. He/she is raising their voice about the wait time, no quality help anymore, prices are to high and so on.
At this point you may want to roll your eyes and look away in judgment about how miserable this person is. But if you hold your new thought pattern in your mind and listen, you just might hear "your Soul" crying out to be heard. You just might hear "your Soul" crying out for compassion and love. It is only through non-judgmental observation that we can discover what is actually going on in any given moment. When we judge or criticize we cut off our own ability to understand and grow.
Using the one Soul technique is perfect when you encounter a situation such as this. It can truly help you learn more about yourself by helping you find where your "crying out" is hiding. It can be an unpleasant experience to learn that we are the very same at the emotional "energy" level as the unhappy man or women at the checkout line. Ask yourself, "what is it" that is really bothering me about watching this person. Does he or she bring out anger, disgust, perhaps intolerance or some other negative emotion that you would really like to improve?
Your ego will try to protect you and would have you roll your eyes and look away in judgment. This is the ego's job. Your ego tries to protect you from anything that looks like hurt. It will offer you an excuse of denial such as "I'm not like that" or "I don't do that" and she shouldn't either. The ego doesn't want you to feel any of your buried hurts or pains. It prefers that you just let sleeping dogs lie. But there won't be any healing of emotional pains as long as you listen to your ego. As long as you deny your hurt or pain, you'll simply keep seeing it in other people's behavior in one form or another.
No one wants to admit that they hold negative emotions and energies inside. And no one wants to admit that "I am in some way what I am looking at". Even though we may not always act out our negative side like the grocery store lady, nevertheless those same negative energies are inside us waiting for just the right set of circumstances to being them out of us.
Everyone has a internal positive and negative side. Even Mother Theresa, Gandhi, Christ, Buddha and other divine teachers and healers had both a positive and negative side. So don't worry when you discover negative traits in yourself... you'll always be in good company. You, as the only Soul on the planet, will encounter individuals who are simply mirroring your internal traits. The positive and the negative.
Using this thought experiment, you may discover that there is no one else left to blame for anything that happens. It stands to reason because if there's only one Soul on the planet and it's mine - who's left to blame but you. Could we still judge others for showing us what is already inside of us?
When we judge someone else as if they are separate from us, it becomes as the Bible states, "Judge not lest ye be judged". By the time my experiment ended, a quite thank you had replaced my usual judgments and condemnations of others.
Can this experiment in thought change the way you live?
After a week or two of experimentation with this new thought pattern, you'll probably come up with your own unique understandings. Hopefully, as you practice this empowering technique, you will experience the freedom that comes from not blaming and judging others for what happens in your life, the good and the bad. You'll be free from the burden of being a victim of circumstance. Every action, positive and negative, can now happen for your benefit. When you practice this thought experiment... every experience will become an experience that helps you learn, helps you grow and helps you love.
With the "only one Soul on the planet at a time and it's mine" concept we begin to foster internal heartfelt power. The kind of power that is gentle and loving to one another, gentle and loving to the planet, kind to all things.
Perhaps you'll begin to see others as childlike; in need of love and compassion. Or perhaps you will see them through your own Soul's eyes as delivering an all important message or lesson. Either way, with just one Soul on the planet at a time you won't be able to run and hide from yourself any longer. You will live life head-on with healing.
Can this simple concept change the world?
When we deliberately experiment with life's workings and introduce ourselves to positive creative change, we change the world. Living as though there is only one Soul on the planet at a time, we can come to realize that when we hurt someone, kill someone, hate someone, become jealous or any other negative as well as positive emotion, we are doing all these things to our own selves.
When we change, the world changes. Experiment with life! Start with this new thought pattern, "there is only one Soul on the planet at a time and it's mine"! See if it can help you change your life for the better.
My life experiment ended with this beautiful concept being incorporated into my life. My findings at the end of my experiment... the concept is true for me! I learned ~ we are one. No one is separate from the other. There really is only one Soul on the planet at a time and it's mine.
