Soichiro Honda's passion was motorized vehicles, but, paradoxically, he introduced Honda motorcycles. He enjoyed driving extremely fast, as well as enjoying racing, and since he worked in an auto repair shop as a teenager, he knew the mechanical things. He owned both a Harley Davidson along with an Indian, and he was quite experienced at motorcycle riding. Even though he already owned an auto repair shop in 1928, it was only in 1948, when he was 41 years old, that Soichiro Honda started the Honda Motor Company. He believed he must design it well, and produce it well, to compete well, so his primary focus was on design, followed by quality. Even with motorcycle sales being on an ascending trend in 1953, the economic depression in Japan almost wrecked his company. A small amount of motorcycles had been selling, and since he just didn't want to put people out of work, he kept the factory open. It was subsequently a good decision, because the C100 Super Cub was released in 1958, and it became the world's most successful motorcycle. The bike was versatile as well as cheap, near anybody's reach, driven by a 4-stroke motor with a 3-speed transmission. Not only could new drivers operate it effortlessly, but it became a way of commuting for women. Honda arrived at the spot of the largest manufacture of motorcycles by 1959, simply because of the success of this bike. They decided that it was time for expansion all over the world. They believed that the USA was the main market to capture at the outset. Endorsement by the American public would mean acceptance by the rest of the world. Honda was in fact first on the market to the American public in June, 1959, in Los Angeles, and by 1960 a person could buy a Honda from any of more than 75 stores. By means of community involvement , mostly through sponsoring 50% of the funding needed by a pair of organizations, Honda became a trusted brand. These were the Motorcycle Industry Council, along with the Motorcycle Safety Council, both highly prized by enthusiasts of motorcycles. In the 70's the Honda company kept developing new models that people just couldn't resist, and they stayed number one in the industry. They were quickly thought to be the speediest bikes in the world, flowing from their winning of over 70 global races in 1973. The revolutionary GL1000 Gold Wing was launched in 1975, making touring bikes comfortable and stylish, and the style was hurriedly emulated by Honda's competitors. Innovative motorcycles, popular with different cultures, have continued to be manufactured by Honda. In addition they try to maintain a good impression with the public by donating many motorcycles each year to causes that are deemed worthy. Honda continue to encourage biking safety through the classes they sponsor and by helping bikers have access to the most up-to-date information available. During many decades now Honda have confirmed that their motorcycles happen to be amongst the most reliable around. A number of the big challenges they have taken, have presented them such a prosperous empire in motorcycles.
