Honda motorcycles were invented by Soichiro Honda, however his obsession was vehicles. Driving fast plus racing were activities he enjoyed, and this interest was complemented by his mechanical knowledge, picked up from working in an auto repair shop while he was in his teens. He could tell a lot about driving motorbikes, actually being the owner of a Harley as well as an Indian.

Honda ran a repair service shop in 1928, but was 41 years old in 1948, when he originally started the Honda Motor Company. He believed he must design it well, and create it well, to compete well, so his primary focus was on design, followed by quality. Even with motorcycle sales being on an increasing trend in 1953, the economic depression in Japan almost sank his company. He kept his manufacturing plant in operation so as to avoid laying off people, even though only a small number of motorcycles were actually selling. The intelligence of this determination was borne out in 1958, by the release of what became the most successful motorcycle in the world, the C100 Super Cub. The transmission was efficient in only three speeds, and the motor was 4-stroke, but it was versatile, cheap and everybody could use it.

Not merely could new users operate it effortlessly, but it became a way of commuting for women. Honda attained the standing of the largest manufacture of motorcycles by 1959, mainly because of the success of this bike. At this point they made a decision to set their sights on the entire world. They believed that if they could initially capture the United States market, it might start the ball rolling. They believed if their designs were accepted by the American people, they would certainly win over the rest of the world as well. The first retail store selling Honda motorcycles opened in June of 1959, in Los Angeles, and by 1960, successful dealerships, selling Honda's, were more than 75.

By making presented half the money for two important organizations, Honda showed their commitment to the community and won a huge amount of public trust for their company. These were the Motorcycle Industry Council, as well as the Motorcycle Safety Council, both highly valued by devotees of motorcycles. In the 70's the Honda company kept developing new models that people just couldn't resist, and they stayed number one in the industry. In 1973 Honda motorcycles were the champions of over 70 races around the globe, and they were soon famous as the speediest available. Throughout 1975 the GL1000 Gold Wing was introduced as a touring bike, which delivered style and comfort to touring bikes, quickly copied by other manufacturers.

Revolutionary motorcycles, popular with different cultures, have continued to be made by Honda. Part of their excellent image is a result of their continued practice of donating motorcycles to causes that they regard as worth supporting. Honda always encourage biking safety through the courses they sponsor and by helping bikers have access to the most up-to-date information available. Through many decades now Honda have demonstrated that their motorcycles are amongst the most reliable around. A number of the big challenges they have taken, have made them such a profitable empire in motorcycles.
