Many of us are aware of the saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," and this is possibly never so true as when dealing with yeast infections. Thankfully, there are a few steps one can take to avoid one of these nasty infections.

Staying healthy and fit can not only assist in preventing yeast infections but also protects against other minor ailments. Consuming a healthy diet with a good assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables, staying away from sugary and "junk" food, as well as drinking an 8 ounce glass of water every hour is a good idea.

Plain, unsweetened yogurt is a great food for helping your body fend off a yeast infection. Be sure the yogurt contains live, active cultures. You can also find acidophilus tablets in your nearby health foods or vitamin store. These helpful bacteria, available in yogurt, are normally found in the body and ward off candida. Garlic tablets can also be taken to offer your immune system a boost.

Because of a woman's anatomy, women have yeast infections quite a bit more readily than men. Candida is a fungus that thrives in moist, warm and acidic places and a woman's vaginal region provides an ideal location for yeast to grow.

There are actually some foods which will encourage candida growth by increasing the body's acidity. Some foods to avoid include highly acidic foods such as coffee, eggs, alcohol, grains, soda and sugar. Keep in mind that it can require 25 glasses of water just to neutralize a can of soda that has been consumed.

The clothes you wear can also help stop a yeast infection. Look to wearing cotton panties and loose fitting pants or a skirt. Consider not wearing any clothes or if you'd prefer just have on a loose nightgown. This is so that your vaginal area can "breathe" more adequately.

If you go swimming, take your bathing suit off as soon as possible. Dry yourself down as best you can and preferably, take a shower or bath following the swim. Bathing often can also reduce the chances of an infection.

It's normal for people to have a cough or a cold from time to time. Try to let the cold run its course before looking for any prescribed medications. Herbal and homeopathic remedies can often work just as well as over-the-counter drugs when dealing with the symptoms of the common cold.

Keep in mind that not only are yeast infections unpleasant, in long term and extreme cases they can eventuate to other complications including diabetes. For women who suffer from these infections most, seek the help of a dietitian and a gynecologist for advice and treatment alte
