For those first time chainsaw buyers, the whole process can seem a little daunting and you will be faced with many questions. There are a number of different brands, models and sizes on the market, so it can be very easy to become confused and just grab whichever chainsaw happens to be in front of you at the time. Before you go shopping, ask yourself the following questions to ensure that you make the right choice:
- “Will I be using my chainsaw for domestic or commercial applications?”
This is important because commercial chainsaws tend to be more powerful than domestic ones – they need to be able to stand up to constant use and be fairly portable. For these reasons, a petrol chainsaw is generally the best option, as they are much more powerful than their electric counterparts and are not restricted by a power cord. If you will only be cutting up a little wood here and there, an electric chainsaw will suit your needs just fine. - “Will I be using my chainsaw over a large area or in a more confined space?”
Even though you may be only using your chainsaw for domestic applications, if you have a large property on which to work you will find that an electric model is unsuitable. What are you going to do if there are no power points within easy reach? Use an extension cord? This is highly dangerous, so a petrol chainsaw is definitely a much safer option. - “Will I be felling trees or cutting up stray branches?”
Cutting down an entire tree will require the use of a chainsaw that is highly powerful and portable, as well as one that has an exceptional blade; unfortunately, electric models simply aren’t up to the task. If you are only going to be cutting up whatever tree debris you find lying around, however, you probably don’t need a chainsaw that is as powerful. - “Is noise going to be an issue?”
Where you live should also be a consideration when it comes to buying a chainsaw, as living in a suburban area is known to create problems with the neighbours if noisy machines are used. An electric chainsaw is essentially noiseless, so this is the better option if you live in a more residential area.
By answering the above questions before you go out chainsaw shopping, you can ensure that you make the right decision the first time around and are not forced to return it, shamefaced, because it is unsuitable. Often, noise should be the last of your concerns, as council restrictions enable you to use noisy power tools (including chainsaws) during certain hours, regardless of what the neighbours would prefer.

Ancestry of the Human Race (Part Forty-Seven)
About one million years ago, the immediate ancestors of mankind made their appearance by three successive and sudden mutations stemming from early stock of the lemur type of placental mammal. These early lemurs involved in the ancestry of the human species were not directly related to the pre-existent tribes of gibbons and apes then living in Eurasia and northern Africa, whose offspring had survived to the present time. Neither were they the offspring of the modern type of le
