Anxiety is one of the most common mental disorders that affect millions of people in America. Examples of anxiety disorders are generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), separation anxiety or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). You could have many more than one anxiety disorder to choose from. In some cases anxiety is caused by a medical issue that requires medical treatment.
Anxiety can cause physical symptoms such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, cramping, numbness or tingling, headache, dizziness, sweating, and heart palpitations. It can also cause mental health issues such as low self-esteem, intrusive thoughts, panic attacks or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Some studies indicate that 20% of those people who have experienced a traumatic event have re-experiencing anxiety or depression four to six years later. A recent study indicated that women with PTSD had a significantly greater presence of anxiety and depression disorders compared to women without PTSD. Those with anxiety disorders may also have higher rates of alcohol or drug abuse along with higher employment turnover and lower life satisfaction.
One of the greatest fears for people with anxiety is that their feelings will overwhelm them and cause them to be unable to function normally in their daily lives. This could lead to higher rates of absenteeism at work, use of anti-depressant medications, substance abuse or other related psychiatric illnesses such as ODD and OCD. It is important for you to remember that these fears are unfounded. People do get anxious about things that cause them no physical harm and they do suffer from mental health problems. The difference is that when you have anxiety you worry excessively and this leads to more problems that can lead to more anxiety and depression.
It is possible to act to improve the quality of indoor air, in particular by choosing materials that emit less polluting substances, by improving the ventilation conditions of the premises, and by adopting appropriate behaviors in one's home (maintenance of appliances to combustion, smoking, use of cleaning products, etc.).
