However, there are several things an individual should know about medical tourism to make sure they have a safe and successful trip. As patients continue to look for alternatives for their medical needs they also need to become more informed about traveling abroad for medical treatment. rnThe first step to successful medical travel is doing proper research. Patients should find out information about the particular procedure they are looking to get done and compare their expectations with what is achievable by the surgery. Additionally, they should find out about the required follow up care, recovery time and physical therapy. Patients should also inquire about the hospital and the surgeon. Consider the hospital’s accreditation, awards and recognitions the facility and equipment. Learn about the surgeon’s background including education, training and certifications. In addition to doing research on the procedure, surgeon and the hospital, learn about the destination country. When an individual is choosing a destination country, their selection should be based on cost, quality, convenience and the distance they must travel. The more research the patient does the more of an educated decision they can make. Patients should keep their primary physician informed about their decision of medical travel. Many times the patient can set up a conference call with the overseas doctor and their local doctor to discuss any questions or concerns regarding their trip and procedure. Depending on the type of treatment, the patient may need to visit their local doctor for post-surgery follow up and will need assistance transferring health records to the overseas doctor. Before the patient leaves for their trip they should have all of the necessary documentation in order including medical records, passport, visa, credit cards and traveler checks. Patients should make copies of all of their important documentation and leave it in a safe place at home. They should also keep important contact information with them including the hospital, their local doctor, overseas doctor, and an emergency contact. The last step to ensure a safe and successful trip overseas is to work with a medical tourism facilitator. Medical tourism companies will help patients connect with doctors and hospitals that specialize in the specific procedure the patient is looking for. They can provide detailed information about the procedure, destination country, hospitals and surgeons. Additionally they can help to coordinate the entire trip for the patient. Including, arranging travel, scheduling the procedure, transferring medical records, financing, car services, accommodations and passports and visas, etc. They can help to elevate some of the stress associated with planning the trip. All the patient has to worry about is packing their bag. Patients should due diligence on medical travel and plan their trip with a medical tourism company.
