OUR THOUGHTS CREATE OUR FEELINGS Please click this Link to view Video.
In video #1 we learned about Thinkiatry’s 1st Principle – Thinking. We each have an individually unique “Thought System” comprised of our interpretation of our own thoughts and those of others accumulated throughout our lives. It is impossible for any two of us to have identical thought systems. Others will never think exactly the same way we do. The major impact our thought systems have on our relationships will be discussed in a future video.
We also learned that we can literally “Watch What We Think” and choose which thoughts to pursue or ignore and send to the Trash Bin. This ability to choose thoughts destroys the myth many of us have believed since childhood that our thoughts are reality, they’re not, they are just thoughts.
Now that we know we can watch and choose from among literally hundreds of continuous thoughts each day our challenge becomes which thoughts to follow or ignore?
Thinkiatry’s 2nd Principle of Feelings gives us a foolproof thought guidance system to follow. The time it takes for any thought we have to affect our feelings is the same amount time it takes to see light after we turn the switch – it’s instant. Any thought you choose to make real instantly creates a corresponding feeling(s). Our feelings let us know when our thoughts are off track and headed toward unhappiness and conflict.
I am sure most of you would agree that our negative thoughts and feelings are at the root of anger, depression, stress, low self-esteem, divorce and other emotional challenges we face each day. You can’t be sad without sad thoughts or depressed without depressing thoughts and so on. The only value to negative feelings is to let us know that we are seeing life in a distorted manner.
Once my feelings warn me that I’m making negative thoughts real, I watch my thoughts and rid my mind of those negative thoughts before they can become a full-blown thought attack – feeling bad – and a low mood.
Learn to use your feelings as the navigational tool they are meant to be. It takes some practice, but the more negative thinking you can ignore the higher the level of healthier psychological functioning and happiness you will achieve each day.
Thinkiatry is the Principles, Process, and Path to healthier psychological and happiness in our lives.
