One of the side effects of hypnosis, or any transformative process, is a kind of inner conflict or worry about who we will be when the transformation is complete. The simplest of behavior modifications can have this effect. We get very used to a habit and are sure we will miss it when it is gone, even if it is something we know to be harmful, smoking for example. Before I quit smoking it was one of my biggest secret worries; who would I be if I did not have a cigarette to define me? After I really quit I still had this worry for some months. Gradually it dissipated but it took awhile. What helped was knowing that this is a very normal reaction to a habit change. It helps immensely to be aware of this very normal mental process. Here are some of the indications that you might be experiencing such a reaction. • Emotional Discomfort! When you feel uncomfortable but are not sure of the source. Ask yourself if the habit or behavior you are changing is causing this. • Feeling Helpless! I can't do it, is one of the things that we tell ourselves when we feel the above discomfort. Of course you can do it, just notice the reaction and ignore it. • Everyone Knows! We often are more worried about how others will see us then is actually warranted. On the other hand, sometimes this is justified because those around us do not want us to leave a habit behind as this will reflect on their own negative habits. If you are experiencing any of the above and are aware of it, you can use this awareness to help you push past the discomfort and embrace the new positive you that is emerging. When you seek out assistance of some kind, a hypnotist, a therapist, a cleric or just a wise friend, you are responding to an inner voice that tells you that change is available should you desire to accept it. It helps to have the assistance of someone who has already gone down this road and has a map so to speak. They may not have gone down your particular road but all of these transformations have some elements in common. The above three effects are almost always there to some degree and the task of your helper is to aid you in traversing these reactions. To a large degree we define ourselves by our habits. It may be habits of thought or emotion or physical movement but some form of reassurance will be there because we need it. But, when we are very attached to what is obviously a negative habit we are beating ourselves up for no reason. Actually we may invent a reason or two, often because of our parents or family or something like that. What is true however, is that it is now ours and an excuse is just that, an excuse. Examine your habits. Ask yourself what it would be like to let go of just one negative habit. Notice how the mind wants to create excuses. Then look deeper and ask yourself what is emerging from deep inside. The new positive you is there, waiting to come forth if you but allow it and, if you feel the need, ask for help.
