Songwriting is a skill which becomes less difficult with repetition as with so many different in life. After you've been songwriting for a time, your mind becomes accustomed to developing music ideas on its own and gets in a system where it is frequently churning trying to come up with great melodies and great lyrics all by itself. If you're not yet there yourself, there are different things which you can do to kick start ideas for songwriting that I make use of regularly.

In this post I am going to address three ways to generate ideas for songwriting.

The first of these ideas for songwriting is to develop a precise genre or micro-genre (as I like to refer to it) in which you wish to write a song in the style of. If it helps you, think of a specific musician who you are a fan of and would like to compose a tune in the style of.

Once you get some song ideas about who you wish to sound or write like for that specific idea, that will begin to open up some of the blockages that were holding you back to start with. This way you're songwriting with a great deal more structure versus getting a songwriting idea that could go an endless quantity of different ways as in writing songs having an overwhelming number of options can sometimes hamper development on a tune.

Another one of my favorite ideas for songwriting is to plan to pen a song that focuses on a precise hook. Envision what instrument will deliver that hook whether that's a guitar solo, a harmonica part, or more commonly a vocal part.

Once you commit to creating a hook through a certain voice like that, creating a hook will be that much less difficult and from there the remainder of the tune will come about. Writing songs is not forever about cutting corners like this technique entails, but occasionally it is just about beginning. As soon as you get an organization you can take it and make changes to it later on if you like. Just beginning on an idea makes transitioning into adjoining parts of that song much less difficult.

I've got one more very effective idea for songwriting that is a strategy I use to teach musicians as being amongst the most successful ways to begin a tune idea from nothing. You can make use of this strategy if you're completely new to writing songs or if you have been doing it for a long time; plenty of accomplished and talented songwriters use this method on a day to day basis to come up with some of their most well-known songs.
