Thurrocks Largest Town - Grays

Thurrock’s largest town and unitary authority in Essex, Grays, also known as Grays Thurrock is a traditional Church of England parish located in the east of London and exactly on the north bank of the River Thames. Grays has gotten its current name from the descendent of the Normal knight Anchetil de Greve, Henry de Grai. Henry Grei was granted the manor of the Grays Thurrock back in 1195 by Richard I himself. The name Thurrock is said to have its origins in the Saxon name meaning “the bottom of a ship.” The Grays Beach is a special site that hosts a local landmark called The Gull and which was ‘born’ in 1860. The Gull used to be the lain on the foreshore for dozens of years and it is currently in a serious state of dilapidation. Another important landmark of the town that is worth mentioning is the Thurrock Yacht Club, which draws a lot of yacht passionate tourists each year. Grays has many railroads such as the Grays railway station, which is being served by C2C and which runs between Fenchurch Street station in London and Shoeburyness; other transportation means refer to the bus services which are operated by Imperial Buses, First Essex, Ensignbus and Regal Busways. Also, the main road in Grays links the centre of the town with Purfleet and Lakeside Shopping Centre. As for the beautiful architecture that is visible all across the town throughout the wonderful homes and buildings there, visitors can admire the Victorian chalk pits such as the Lion Gorge and the Warren Gorge, or the Chafford Hundred residential development. The State Cinema was ground for filming scenes for the movie “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” and also for video sections of Jamiroquai’s “Deeper Underground” for the film “Godzilla.” The beach also features a great children’s playground and the River Thames offers beautiful sights with ships travelling up and down. The Derby Road Bridge is a wonderful place to look down to Thurrock Yacht Club from. Speaking of yachting, Grays has other sporting favorites, such as the local football team (the Grays Athletic) who have won the FA Trophy on two occasions playing non-league football, or the old Arena Essex Hammers, currently known as the Lakeside Hammers speedway team. This team of racers normally races next to the Lakeside Shopping Center, another hotspot of the largest town in Thurrock. Apart from the many exciting places to visit, admire and look into here in Grays, Essex, you should also know the town has some reputable and notable residents who were either born and who lived here or moved to different locations during their lives, but they owe a great deal to their home town. For instance, Emmy-winning television and film director, television producer and author Mick Jackson, former rugby union footballer, currently rugby commentator for Sky Sports Stuart Barnes or X-Factor finalist Austin Drage are just some of these notable people.
