Thyroids are a small butterfly-shaped organ located at the bottom of the front side of the neck. Thyroid glands are responsible for various functions in the body like maintaining the body’s metabolism, releasing hormones which in turn controls how the body consumes oxygen, produce heat and how the body effectively utilizes the energy. However, the problem arises when these cells in the thyroid undergo a permanent change in their DNA and lead to abnormal cell formation. These unusual cells multiples in number and form a tumour or a cancerous cell. However, thyroid cancer can be completely cured if detected at the early stage. Symptoms of Thyroid Cancer As with any cancer, lump formation is a vital sign of cancer risk. It is better not to avoid such symptoms and get it checked right away especially if it overgrows in size. In the thyroid, these lumps form around Adam’s apple, i.e., in the front of the neck. If the pain initially starts in the front of the neck but eventually radiates up to the ears or if there is a swollen gland with or without pain, then it may be a sign of cancer.rnSome may experience trouble swallowing the food or liquid and may find difficulty in breathing. Other changes can also happen like a tone of the voice, hoarseness in them or a continuous cough though there is no cold. One of the cancer types, medullary thyroid cancer may cause red face and changes in the bowel movements like loose stools. It is also possible to have thyroid cancer with no symptoms at all, but it can be detected with the routine physical exams. A doctorconducts various tests to identify any cancer growth like genetic tests, biopsy which shows if the patient has thyroid cancer. Also, other imaging tests like ultrasound, CT Scan, PET Scan will be able to detect the cancer at the beginning stage. Treatment Once the thyroid cancer is detected, your doctor starts the treatment plan right away. There are certain deciding factors which determines what type of treatment should be given to the patient like patient’s age, medical history, size of a tumour, the cancer stage and type of the thyroid cancer. Choosing a right clinic is essential to eradicate any complications and select the medical center which provides the patients a comprehensive and integrated approach to treat thyroid cancers like here. Surgery Surgery is one of the most common type of procedures to treat thyroid cancer in which all or part of the thyroid gland is removed. This procedure is thyroidectomy. They may also remove the lymph nodes and tissues surrounding the thyroid gland. Radioactive Iodine Ablation Most of the thyroid cancers are said to absorb iodine. Thus, after a thyroidectomy radioactive iodine ablation treatment is given to destroy any remaining tissue and the radiation kills the iodine in any thyroid tissue or any nearby lymph nodes. Thyroid Hormone therapy Thyroid hormone pills are prescribed for the patients who got their thyroid fully removed. These pills avoid the reoccurrence of cancer cells and also helps to remove any residue from the tumour cells. These hormone pills lower the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone which is responsible for producing thyroid hormone which in turn facilitates the cancer growth as well. Other treatments include external beam radiation therapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy which are undertaken in some cases.
