THYROID DISORDER The Thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck. The hormones produced by thyroid glands regulate our body's metabolism. Different types of thyroid disorders affect either its structure or function. When your thyroid produces too many hormones the disorder called hyperthyroidism and when it is not produced enough it is called hypothyroidism. Since the thyroid gland is controlled by the pituitary gland and hypothalamus, any disorder of these tissues can also affect thyroid function and it leads to a thyroid problem. Treatment for hyperthyroidism destroy the thyroid gland and block it from producing its hormones. Antithyroid drugs such as methimazole prevent the thyroid from its hormones. A large dose of radioactive iodine also damages the thyroid gland. Surgery can be performed to remove your thyroid gland. If you develop hypothyroidism then you need to take thyroid daily.
