Time Management - Why To-Do Lists Make You Unproductive

Are you one of those people that always make to-do lists for everything? While so many time management courses teach the importance of making these lists, the reality is that they rarely work. The idea of having your life dictated by a list may help you get things done, but its definitely not the way to live a fulfilled life. One of the problems with to-do lists is that it creates stress. When you walk into your office and stare at a long and difficult to-do list then its enough to send you into a frenzy. Often it looks like a mountain in front of you and you end up procrastinating and not getting anything done - which creates even more stress. These lists have very little flexibility and because it does not allow for the inevitable problems of everyday life its very easy to get knocked off course. I don't know if you've noticed, but regardless of the plans you make, life always seems to have a different plan for you. In many ways planning your life seems hopeless and no matter how well you plan things in advance, there is always something else that come up. We live in a completely different world and while to-do lists may have worked in the past the modern world requires of you to be a lot more flexible, nimble and reactive. This does not mean you should not plan things in advance. What it means is that you need to be much more flexible in your planning. Instead of having a list of things to do, why not carry a list with your goals. Focusing on your ultimate outcome is much more productive than being busy and just finishing the next task on a list.
