In many commercial industries, including schools, offices and stores, wall coverings are much more preferable to paint, simply because they require less maintenance. Schools, especially, are high traffic areas full of children with grubby little fingers who like to touch everything in sight. By choosing the most appropriate coverings for your walls, however, you can ensure that you get the most attractive and lasting look possible:
- Color: when it comes to choosing a color for your wall coverings, remember that it will be intensified when spread across a large space and not as subdued as it is on that paint swatch at the hardware store. You should always try to pick a lighter version of the color you desire, as this will account for the change in intensity.
- Material: there is a large number of materials out there that can easily be used as wall coverings, including paint, wallpaper, tiles, marble and stone, woodwork and even fabric. Choose a material that you think will stand up to the wear and tear of your commercial space.
- Area: you must also decide on whether you want to install wall coverings on only one surface (making a sort of feature wall) or whether you want to cover all four wall surfaces in a given room. Remember that, if only doing a feature wall, you can use some more intense colors and textures without overpowering the space.
- Combination: you may also want to consider whether you would like to install a combination of two or three different types of wall coverings. Perhaps you could paint three of the walls and install some matching wallpaper on the fourth one. Or you could tile halfway up each of the walls and paint or wallpaper the remaining surface. The possibilities really are endless.
- Texture: each of the different wall coverings on the market brings with it its own texture. You need to decide whether you want your walls to be a feature of the room itself (in which case, opt for marble and stone, woodwork, tiles or fabric) or whether you want them to blend into the background (in which case, choose paint or wallpaper).
Whilst trial and error can be an effective way to make a decision, remember that it is an expensive one (and that not all coverings can be easily removed). By taking each of the above factors into consideration when choosing the next wall coverings for your commercial space, you can ensure that you make the most appropriate choice for your needs.
