Residents of New Orleans enjoy a terrific climate and a fabulous cultural mix. They also have a wealth of medical choices at their fingertips - about 233 doctors for every 100,000 people. Many of those medical professionals serve in the field of dermatology. How do you choose a dermatologist that's right for your situation? Here are some tips for finding a good match.

The first and most important step is to define your needs. Are you searching for a dermatologist to treat general medical conditions like rashes, moles, and warts? Or one who specializes in aesthetic treatments - Botox, dermal filler, laser resurfacing, anti-aging programs, and skin refinement? Perhaps you need both. Are you seeking a family dermatologist, a pediatric dermatologist, or one who sees only adult patients? Are you at high risk for skin cancer, or do you have other specific dermatology needs?

Good! Now you know what type of dermatologist you are looking for. The internet is the most effective place to begin your search. Most major search engines like specific terms - but not too specific. For example, "dermatologist" will return thousands of results with no geographic distinction. But " dermatologist on the west side of Terrytown who can diagnose and treat a small growth on my child's foot" is probably too long to return a meaningful result. Try something like, "pediatric dermatologist New Orleans." That will refine your search and show you local listings.

Look at the first page or two of results and make a short list, perhaps five, of the practices that interest you most. Now search their names on independent review sites (like Yelp, Angie's List, and City Search). Find out what real patients have to say about the doctor and the practice. Look at the doctor's own website for links to his or her input into medical jou
als, popular publications, or television appearances. Ask friends, family members, and co-workers if they've used any of these dermatologists and for their opinions.

Check the doctors' credentials. Sites like Health grades, Vitals, and Rate MD show educational background and board certifications. You may also want to look for evidence of special training, years of experience, participation in clinical trials, whether the doctor works with medical device developers, and if he or she is certified to train other doctors. These are all indications of additional expertise.

Narrow your list down to two who seem best align with your needs. Call to schedule a consultation with your top pick. Is the receptionist pleasant and efficient? You've simply got be able to talk with your dermatologist. At your appointment, is the doctor thorough and patient with your questions, or do you feel hurried? Does he or she listen as well as talk? Is the staff friendly yet professional? Is the office clean with modern equipment and technology? Is it reasonably accessible from your home?

If you are comfortable with your initial visit - congratulations! You've probably found the right New Orleans dermatologist for your needs. But if you are uncomfortable with any of those aspects, it's worth the investment in the long term to try again with the next doctor on your list.
