• Consider the plant types you want in your garden- The plants you want in your garden will not be solely determined by what plants you want. Before you bring in any plant for your garden, consider your garden’s soil type and the climate of the place in which you stay. Learn what type of plants will healthily survive in that condition. You can seek professionals’ (garden designers’) help to know about your soil type and what plants will suit.
• Choose colorful plants – A garden provides aesthetic joy and enhances the look of your house. So it should look well designed and colorful. Use plants that produce colorful flowers and fruits. Plant more of shrubs as they are colorful, and also produce colorful berries and flowers. Besides, they don’t require much primping and pinching, thus saving you the labor and cost of maintenance.
• Take risks- Though I have previously advised to take into account the soil type and climate of your place before choosing any plant for your garden, there can be exceptions. If there is a particular plant that you had always wanted in your garden, but could not plant it as they are not likely to survive in your garden, take the risk. After planting it, if you see that it is not working, you can always remove it.
• Mulch your garden- Mulch is a layer of organic or inorganic substance that is applied over soil to improve its fertility, retain its moisture and reduce the growth of weeds in your garden. You can apply it on bare soil or around existing plants. Mulches get incorporated into the soil by the activity of worms and other organisms.
• Regularly remove dying or dry flowers- Removing dry and dying flowers regularly gives the plant energy for new blooms makes your garden look neat and beautiful.
• Install proper drainage- Ensure that the containers in which you have planted plants (like pots) have proper drainage system to pass out excess water. If there are areas in your garden where there are sloping soils, build a retaining wall to it that will hold back the soil and prevent it from sliding. Make sure that the retaining walls have the required drainage systems as well.
