Tips for Getting a Record Label

Getting a record label is probably every artist’s dream. They know that getting a label is one of the milestones that will forever define their success. In the process of pursuing this dream, they often forget that the reason holding a record label is such a badge of honor is that it is so difficult to get anyone in the industry to even give you half an hour of their time.

In order to pursue this dream, your first priority should always be your group. The guys who stand next to you on stage are the only ones who knew the name of your group before your group even existed. More importantly, the moment your group falls apart your goal of getting a record label is going to be sinking in quicksand with a neck injury. There are a number executives in the industry, but you have only have one group.

Everyone must have their input and be on the same page. Don’t ignore them or turn your back on them at any point. The group as a whole must work and all contributing members must be happy.

Contributing is the key word here, for obvious reasons. While you are focused on your vision, don’t forget that your loyalties are to the group, not the individual members. If you want a label that bad, you are going to have to be willing to drop the dead weight.

Being in a band should always be about harmony, even when you are dropping a member. Everyone needs to participate in the process and shouldn’t focus on specifics. If you go into too much detail, the other member will just become defensive to rub their sore ego. Just tell them up front that it’s not working out and they can’t stay. Also, let them know that the decision is final and they have to accept it.

When you start a band, your relationships with the other members of your band start off as friendships. When your band starts to take off, you are going to have to accept that your priorities have changed. There is still room for friendships, but if you really want to earn label then you need to accept that friendship will need to take a back seat. As long as everyone is on the same page and wants the same dream, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Getting a record label is hard work. For most bands, the chance of ever getting one is next to nil. Your chances are going to be a lot better if your band can work out their issues together from the beginning. Your chances of getting a label begin and end with your band. The record executives and everyone else are just outsiders who all fall in the middle somewhere.
