A driving test can be a very nerve-wracking experience, but with these four easy tips, you can enter your exam with confidence and pass. 1. Go on a day with good weather. If possible, find out the forecast and choose a day that will be clear and moderate. Rain and snow make for dangerous driving conditions, and it will heighten your anxiety. Also try to schedule your exam in the early morning or afternoon - not close to dusk, when visibility lessens and sunlight impedes your vision. It will be easier for you to focus at these times, driving conditions won’t be challenging, and your examiner may well be in a better mood. 2. Don’t flatter, talk to, or engage your examiner. They are there to grade and evaluate your driving ability, not your personality, and you may annoy them or cause suspicion that you are trying to distract them during your exam. Though you may be nervous, remember that they are just checking to make sure you’re a safe driver and do not pose a threat to others on the road. It’s best to pretend they aren’t there at all. If they speak to you, reply to them as you would a public professional such as a police officer and remember your manners. 3. If possible, use a car that you are comfortable driving and one that is in good repair. You should know all the controls of the car by habit and shouldn’t fumble to use the turn signals, seat adjustment, or gearshift. You should be radiating ease and confidence as you maneuver the car, not awkwardness or nervousness. If borrowing a friend or family member’s car, make sure you’ve driven the car several times for extended outings before your exam. 4. Don’t be upset if you fail the first time. This isn’t a shortcoming, but rather a chance to learn the course and what’s expected of you a bit better before repeating the exam. If you fail several times at one location, try another examiner in another location, if possible. There’s a different route for every location, and chances are you might do better on a country road exam as opposed to the city gridlock, or vice versa. 5. Seek out a professional driving school if you have trouble finding someone to drive with you before your exam. Since most permits require you to drive with a licensed driver present, you may have trouble logging enough hours to gain the confidence needed to pass your exam. If this is the case, pay for a few hours of drive time with a professional instructor. They will point out your weaknesses and help you improve them and pass more easily on test day.
