Tooth decay happens when foods that contain carbohydrates like cereal, milk, cake and candy are left on the surface of the teeth and in between. The bacteria in the mouth digest these foods and turn it into acids. When the bacteria, acid and saliva combine together, it will form a plaque and the acids in plaque destroy the enamel or the outer covering of the teeth. When enamel is destroyed, the tooth will have holes or what you call cavities. This can further damage the dentin and may result to tooth loss. Nobody wants a hole in their teeth that is why it is important to prevent tooth decay. To do this, one must brush teeth regularly with fluoride toothpaste. Brush teeth after eating heavy meals. Also, clean the areas in between the teeth and below the gum line using dental floss. You may also use fluoride mouthwash to thoroughly clean your mouth. Eating nutritious foods will also make your teeth healthy. Not all people are aware that when one has poor oral hygiene he is also prone to health diseases. This is because bacteria can freely enter the body through the mouth, thus weakening the immune system. Fresh fruits and raw vegetables can massage your gums and clean the teeth, so be sure to eat them regularly. Visit your Laurel MD dentist or your personal dentist for regular check ups. If you already have tooth decay, the dentist may put dental sealants on your teeth. If your teeth are in good condition, have cleanings and oral exams instead. Dental cleaning can get rid of stuck germ on the teeth that cannot be removed by tooth brushing. Laurel MD dentists can also prescribe supplemental fluoride to keep your teeth strong. Some people need this kind of medication because their teeth cannot be treated by ordinary toothpaste alone. Also, fluoride water is available in the market to anyone. Laurel dentists also have dental treatments like teeth whitening, dental implants, dental veneers, composite bonding and more to treat problems like discoloration of teeth, tooth loss and chipped tooth. Consult the dentist, avoid tooth decay and maintain a healthy oral hygiene.
