Tips to Make Unpacking More Enjoyable

Unpacking from a move is a daunting task that rivals only packing for the move itself. At least when you are packing you are probably fresh and looking forward to starting a new phase of your life. When you’re unpacking, you are probably sick of the process and just want to get settled in to your new house. However, you can’t get settled until you get all of those pesky boxes unpacked and your belongings in their rightful places.

To begin with, you will need a plan. You probably thought you were done with planning once the movers unloaded the last box and drove away. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. You should decide the order in which you will unpack your rooms. Many people start with the kitchen, move to the bedrooms, then the bathrooms, then the living areas. They leave the garage, basement and outside until last, since those areas don’t usually contain many essentials.

With each room, follow these tips:

1. Unpack the items you will need right away first. That way, if you don’t get done unpacking a room, you will still be able to use your essential when you need them. You won’t have to dig through boxes to find what you need.
2. Before unpacking items other than your essentials, plan where your belongings are going to go. This will make the process easier since you won’t have items strewn all over the place.
3. Make sure you have all the tools you are going to need before you unpack. Such tools include a utility knife, a screwdriver, a hammer, picture-hanging supplies and a recycle bin.
4. There are some tasks you need to do as you think of them. For example, if you want to line your drawers or cupboards, do it before you unpack. Otherwise it will be too much of a hassle to do it later.
5. Before you get too far along in your unpacking, hang up some pictures or place some family photos around the house. You want to make the space yours as soon as possible after the movers leave or you will begin to dread coming home and unpacking every night. Make it a family activity as well so that you can all bond together as you create the home.

Once you get the essentials unpacked, you can take your time unpacking the rest of the house. However, be sure to create some sort of timeline or you could end up living out of boxes until you move again.
