One of the integral people involved with getting your company’s website off the ground is the web developer – this person is responsible for writing all of the code that makes the site look and act the way you want it to. Whilst working with a developer may not feel like an overly important business relationship, it can be very easy to make an enemy who will not want to help you out if there is a problem with your website in the future if you’re not careful. Use these tips to ensure that the project goes as smoothly as possible:

  • Listen to your web developer and ask questions until you understand what they’re saying. If you just agree to everything the developer says without understanding what it actually means, it’s likely that you’ll be unhappy with the final website.
  • Have definable goals. Make sure that you have a clear direction for your website and that you have outlined the order of importance of these goals to your developer. They may have suggestions on how you can improve on achieving these goals.
  • Don’t get angry with your web developer over work that wasn’t completed if you asked for other work to be completed first. They aren’t a superhero – there are only so many hours in the day for them to get work completed in. Decide which tasks need to take priority and communicate this to your developer.
  • Put all of your decisions, corrections and changes in writing. This can be in the form of a letter that is mailed to the developer in an email. You should always follow this up with a phone call making sure that they got your note and that they understand what you are saying.
  • Have respect for your web developer’s time. They have other clients that they need to attend to and will not be able to be at your beck and call at all hours of the day and night. Only call them during business hours and understand that immediate changes could still take a few days.
  • Make all of your payments on time. This is the most important tip for working with a developer. Most clients will hold off on paying until the last possible second, but this is really not appreciated. If you cannot pay on time, speak to them about this well in advance of the bill’s due date.

By ensuring that you develop a good relationship with your web developer, you will find yourself privy to all sorts of information and updates that other clients wish that they had have known. It can be very easy to put your developer offside, which can make them unwilling to help you out of a tight spot months or even years down the track (if the code of your website becomes damaged, for example). Use the above tips to ensure that you are both kept happy.
