Do you find self-promotion offensive? I often do. But what if it’s rooted not in hubris, but dedication to a cause? What if it’s more akin to “shameless exploitation in pursuit of the common good”, the phrase coined by late philanthropist and actor Paul Newman, referring to his food company, which donates all profits to charity? I’m struggling with this because I want to share some news about something that will help millions of people impacted by cancer. I’ll play a small role in it, and that’s why it makes me uncomfortable. But I’ll announce it anyway. NBC’s “Today Show” will run a four-part series next week about cancer. Segments on how to support people with cancer, the economics of cancer, life after cancer, and the future of cancer research will appear on consecutive days, starting Monday. In their research, the producers came across my book and ultimately invited me on the show to talk about what helps, what hurts, and what heals. So, this Monday, June 8, barring any breaking news that would bump the segment, I’ll be on set with Matt Lauer or Meredith Vieira (I’ve admired her since I first saw her work on “West 57th Street”, one of the best news magazine shows of all time) and award-winning journalist Nancy Snyderman, MD, NBC News Chief Medical Officer. I’ll talk about some of the statements people with cancer want others to know, based on my research and personal experience, as well as input I’ve received from so many readers. Thank you for caring enough to be a part of this community. And please forgive the self-promotion. It’s not shameless, and really, it’s not about me, or my book. It’s about helping people - improving the mental, as well as physical health of cancer survivors and all of us impacted by this cruel disease. If any of you have something to say about what helps, what hurts, or what heals, especially in regard to respect, forgiveness, or hope, I’d appreciate if you’d share it here, because I might be able to use it in some way on the show next week.
